69 gmc 402 engine

I just bought a 69 gmc custom that is highly optioned truck. 402 engine, A/C, power steering, factory buckets, . My question is will the engine big block brackets be the same as a 71/72 k10. I was thinking about building the engine for my 72 k10.

Re: 69 gmc 402 engine

I'm guessing you're talking about the motor mounts? The 4wd trucks did not come with BB's, if you use the stock cross member there are clearance issues with the passenger side frame & exhaust manifold. I have seen BB 4wd's with the frame notched for clearance. I'm thinking if you raise the engine height slightly it may improve clearance (sorta like the BB perches on the 2wd's)

There are a few members (probably more than a few) that have done this conversion, maybe they'll chime in.

Big block swap into a 67-72 K truck comes with challenges as noted above. Even more if a manual trans. You have to REALLY want a big block to make it worthwhile. Just a feel good more than anything. 383 small block the answer to more motor in a 4x4.

Search the board and Google as well about big block swap into 67-72 trucks. Several of them out there documented fairly well. That will give you a good idea of everything you need to do.

Re: 69 gmc 402 engine

On a small block with 700r4 conversion we moved the engine forward to make driveshafts work w/o alteration. My point is, if I did a big block swap (which I won't be) I would see about moving mounts forward. We used the 6 cyl position and the bonus was getting the distributor out of the firewall and allowed for taller air cleaner.

If original engine, '69 would have been 396. No big difference, but '70 was first year for 402.

Re: 69 gmc 402 engine

I just stabbed a 406 small block in there and moved it forward. Sounds like a cool truck. Why not just keep it the way it is?

The body isn't the best of shape. It's totally complete less the bucket seats and carb.
