Ther isn't any reason to be worried about the opinions of others. I took a full on 67 prostreet tempest to the dragstrip and it ran a best 14.44. People laughed and so did I. Next time out, with issues fixed it ran a 10.13. All motor all Pontiac.

Aren't you curious what that "bad mamajama" runs??

Ha ha.... Well yes...
The Hot Rodder/Drag Racer in me wants to run the straight and narrow path.

Never dynoed her, but doing the math she should be around 430hp.
In order for her to run right I have to use premium gas with Lucas Octane Booster added. This ethanol mixture added to the gas is heck on the older engines. Got a 2,200 stall in the 350TH Transmission. (Good For Crusin)
Kinda want a Hurst Pro-Matic Ratchet Truck Shifter.
She's still a one legger with 3.70 gear. (Good Road Gear)
I would like to put a Detroit Locker or just a simple posi with a 4.10 - 4.11 gear in the Ford 9". Make her a little more peppier. (No Spools).
Be nice to narrow the rear for wider Mickey Hides. But there goes more work and altering and not counting the rear coil overs we just put on....

Just to be honest 66-PMD-GMC... She started going to be full all out Pro/Street Beast of the South East with a big block or a small block with big cubic inches. I was craving on a Small Block 427 for years.. You know Rat Power In The Body Of A Mouse.
But the economy, job security, and rising gas/oil prices I guess I need to keep her mild and tame.
If I had the money... Buddy she would be a ground pounder, tire scorcher Like this Bad Boy!

http://www.sporttruck.com/featuredve...uck/index.html

And if I had more money and sponsors I would race a 6 sec 1962 Chevy Shortbed Stepside Pro/Mod.
On the both doors of the truck would be a quote, ("Beast of the South East")
On the tailgate would be a quote, ("REAL POWER IS IN THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST!")
And on the two parachutes in the rear would say, "YOU JUST GOT SMOKED!" when fully opened.
I LOVE PRO/STREET...
I LOVE PRO/MOD & OUTLAW 10.5

Re: Project: "Full Metal Yellow Jacket" Build Thread

Not sure what motor you have but 430 HP for a small block is a lot. It takes serious internals in a mouse motor to make that much power. It should break that TH350 but your stall speed is low for a 430 hp small block.

That's not saying your motor isn't what you say it is, I am sure it makes plenty of power.
I guess I am wound a bit different when it comes to cars and trucks I build. I want to know how they do in a straight line. I like to sort out the combination on the track and running it helps me accomplish this.

I am not bashing you, don't get me wrong. I was just curious if you had run your truck.
I am getting frustrated with my 63 truck.
I am starting over on my pro-street frame. I just didn't like the way it was looking and then I have this dang motor staring at me every time I walk out in the storage room.
Started life as a 400 Pontiac, dumped a 428 crank in it, (440 inches),
sealed power flat top pistons, H-beam rods, ARP fasteners,
used some 6X-4 iron heads with 2.11/1.77 valves. Roller springs, rockers, lifter and cam and a dual quad topping it off. I have a TH400 with a 2800 stall speed torque converter and the 9 inch with 3.50 gears. I can't wait to get her out to Firebird dragway and sort t her out.
The other change I am making is dumping the 4 link and going back to the trailing arms. I need to find some that I can use on the narrowed 9 inch.
Oh, and I completely agree on the power of Christ....

No problem bud.
Yea, It's a 355 with 327 heads on it.
She maybe more around 400 horses or just a hair more.
The 327 heads were for Nostalgia reasons.
I agree on the torque converter.. I need at least 2,800 stall on her to make her perform a little better.
Or a 3,000 stall
RPM Range on the cam is 2200 to 5800
She has a shift kit in her too which gives me more umph.
Ahhhh Bud...
You got me wanna start beafing her up more now
I'm in Jegs and Summit magazines all the time.
Well I'm still working on her... Still doing changes here and there.
Not sure if I wanna break the engine back down.
She's a good running engine that me and my dad put together.
I may have her dynoed one day just to see where she really is.
Found a place near me that does it.
The local drag strip near me is 1/8th of a mile and I'm down there allot.

What CC are double camel hump heads?
When I build a motor, what the block came out of or the heads off of doesn't mean much if anything.
What I do to them changes them so what they are off of is insignificant.
I cc all heads and cut them so all the chambers are the same. Curious where yours are to net a static 10.5:1
I have built lots of SBC's but I am really not into them personally so I don't know all the small block lingo.. sorry about that.
What deck height do the pistons come out to?
What are the valve springs set up to? Height and tension? 69 Z28 doesn't mean much to me... sorry
To come up with .490 lift on a .445/.465 cam, 1.65 rockers, right? That would/should get you 490/500 lift.
Did you have the heads ported? I hear so many people talk about porting and polishing street heads... polishing helps the fuel puddle at low RPM and that isn't good. Porting is all that needs to be done on street heads.
3000 stall speed would be kind of a drag (old school term for not nice) to drive on the street. 2600-2800 should be fine as it gives the motor 400-600 rpm to spin up while the cam starts working but frankly the "specs" for where the engine works is entirely dependent on what combination you are using in the motor.
Torque rating is a huge denominator in engine design as well.
Your motor sounds healthy in the video I saw. However, to make over 400 hp your mouse motor needs to make about 1.25 HP per cubic inch... that is significant.

Not sure that it matters since I am rarely in the mainstream of popular thinking, but I have a somewhat offbeat perspective about pro/street builds, and applaud your current build approach and your candor in explaining your priorities.

My truck was also built just to have fun with, although rather than pro/street I grew up when gassers ruled, and that’s the build direction I was headed. With a Pete Jackson gear drive, manual 4 speed, and throaty mufflers, and very limited insulation, it’s rather noisy. With 4.10 rear gears and a 2.64 1st gear, it offers impressive acceleration. Had I remained employed a few more years it would have received fenderwell headers and a tunnel ram with a BDS scoop sticking through the hood, (and most likely produced less power than it did before). But I don’t consider it a poseur. Everything in it is functional, and it goes fast enough to be scary if driven like an idiot.

Sitting in a parking lot full of jelly bean cars or at the local drive-thru it stands out like a movie star and attracts a lot of attention. Even at a national rod run it fits in and receives a lot of admiring comments. Almost every trip out of the garage results in a pedestrian double take, or thumbs up from the general motoring public. And my squeeze loves it for going on dates.

Here’s the best representation of my car hobby philosophy I can find. It’s a photo I recently re-discovered on Google Images:

I bought the magazine this photo first appeared in, I believe back in the late 60’s. I was blown away with the cool factor. It still had a front bumper, did not have a Moon tank up front, no blower sticking through the hood, and no obvious fenderwell headers, but it screamed performance. It may or may not have been competitive at the track, but it certainly would have been a hit at the local drive in theater, and an efficient chick magnet.

My truck doesn’t do a lot of things very well. Soft springs severely limit load capacity. It’s impractical for basic transportation because it spins 3,000 rpms at 60 mph resulting in lousy gas mileage at freeway speeds. Windshield wipers and heating are marginal keeping it grounded most of the winter months. And although it will get there quickly - it doesn’t have much of a top end. A genuinely fast car, a performance rice burner, or even a motorcycle could easily leave me in the dust. But the driving experience and attention it generates continue to be fun every time it leaves the garage.

I don’t have the finances to make my truck consistently competitive without breakage. Being enjoyable and attention getting is enough for me. I feel the same way about pro/street cars and trucks. It doesn’t matter to me if they “are” fast, or just “look” fast. At a rod run I’m still going to stop and look at all the details and admire the craftsmanship that went into the build.

Re: Project: "Full Metal Yellow Jacket" Build Thread

I agree markeb01,
I don't run brackets in any car or truck and I am not trying to be the fastest truck on earth either.
Personally, as I said I like to go out to the "run what you brung" night and run a vehicle out. I usually find stuff that needs attention and get it sorted out.
I have been curious what the "full metal yellow jacket" truck can do and know that like you, he has an old photo of a truck that he sees as "the goal".
Hope I don't come off as trying to push someone one way or another.
I build motors and love to hear detail about them. I learn from others mistakes and accomplishments both.
That is a cool gasser look...
Happy resurrection day to you all

Hey guys, you don't have to have a fast truck, just a fast SOUNDING truck. My truck has a 400 hp 383 in it and it'll pin you to the seat but I wouldn't consider it a really fast truck. It has a nice lopey idle and 2 4" round Magnaflow mufflers that are pretty much only technically "mufflers" so it sounds fast. I thought for sure every punk kid in a Mustang or import racer wannabe would be challenging me at the lights but so for its only been 1 kid in his mom's 4 door and I think that was just so he could hear how it sounded when I step on it.

At least you're not rushing the truck and just throwing it together only to be disappointed with it later.

Your right creep, throwing something together is a certain recipe for failure and disappointment.

Building HP and more importantly torque... is something that needs to be planned for.

Getting it to the tires is a trick in itself too and doesn't come by chance.
There are lots of trucks on this site that show lots of hard work, forethought and determination, I for one respect that.

It fits fine.
I'm just very disappointed of the quality of the cowl hood over all.
I wish Harwood would make cowl hoods for us 60-66'ers.
Harwood Hoods provide durability with precise, first generation molds that guarantee excellent fit and hand-laid construction (not chopped glass).
I have seen these hoods on mustangs and camaros. They are gel coated and the underneath is good finish quality also.

There are lots of trucks on this site that show lots of hard work, forethought and determination, I for one respect that.

I love the sound of a motor built for drag racing.
I wish I could capture the sound of my motor running through the 3" long tube collectors....
But I was never an audio visual expert and probably never will be.

Yeah, I can never capture the true sound of mine either. It always comes out extremely distorted and garbled.

It is sure looking good...are you planning on painting it yellow again? I may have missed what your plans are for paint. Sure is a tough looking truck!

This section contains ready-to-install vulcanized glass channels. These channels are of the highest quality and authenticity.
With or w/o reveal molding implies models that had chrome around the perimeter of the glass. Many times this made a difference as to the type of weatherstrip used.
