70 C10 rear brake ?

Brakes hung partially - popped petal and they released. Since I have disk in front I expected rear. Pulled hubs today to see what I needed.

Passenger side looked to have a good 20% of lining left. Driver side was so thin that lining was crackled on both primary and secondary shoes.

Why would hydraulic brakes wear with so much difference? The pressure should be equal. Passenger drum had almost no wear - driver drum had such a low amount that I am not going to have them turned.

Re: 70 C10 rear brake ?

I'd guess the worn out side was working fine, the other had a problem with the self adjuster which kept it from fully functioning. Maybe just corrosion. It happened to me when I had a Waverunner due to backing my rear wheels into the water when I launched it.

AcampoDave that kinda makes sense. The adjuster, however, looked OK at first glance. See pics.

Re: 70 C10 rear brake ?

Is that brake fluid all over it and was it like that when you popped the drum? Also adjusters come in drivers and passengers side. They thread in opposite directions. After all these years, who knows they could be both the same. Edit: having drums turned always improves braking when you remove the "mirror finish" As a bonus your e-brake will stop you better in an emergency. These are the rear brakes.... do it once first class and it'll last a long time. Way longer than fronts do.

Re: 70 C10 rear brake ?

After fighting break problems on my 68 for many years I finally decided to go all out and replace all new parts. I got all new break cylinders, shoes, springs and clips and had the drums turned. I took apart the adjusters and cleaned them with wire brush and coated them with a thin coat of grease.

I also replaced all the rubber hoses -two in front and the one for the rear brakes (I had one collapse on my 69 many years ago and caused the rear brakes to hang). It's amazing the difference it made in braking

Re: 70 C10 rear brake ?

Wet stuff was mineral spurts that I was using to clear off dust. Since there was only 'bout 20% left, I assumed the adjuster is correct but I'll double check when I do that side.

I had switched fronts to disk.

You might want to double check that the adjusters are on the correct side, or are correct for the side they are on.

Yep,, night and day. I redid all that stuff too and even my longbed with drums all around will do a nice straight hard stop, with no sudden grabs or pulls, or it can lay down a 4 wheel skid when you slam 'em hard.

Re: 70 C10 rear brake ?

Had time to rebuild passenger side today. I found nothing wrong. I was expecting seized or hard to turn adjuster but it rotated freely. It was correct one - marked for right side.

Go figure. I can't remember how long it was since I last relined so if it has the same trouble - I won't complain.

Check the emergency brake cables. The side with the thin linings is probably hanging up.
