New Rear End Gears

Taking Big Red ('87 R3500 Crew Cab Dually 454 TBI TH400) into Young's Gear tomorrow to get new gears put in the rear axle.
Out with the O.E.M. 4:10's (gas mileage around 7.5 in town & 11 highway)
And in with 3:54 gears from DANA/SPICER CORP.
Also installing a GEAR VENDOR'S OVERDRIVE UNIT that'll drop the final drive to 2:77 when engaged. I'll be taking it for a nice long drive to Soldotna, Alaska this next weekend. I'll report back on the gas mileage & performance when I get back home.

You can never go wrong with overdrive. Keep us posted! The TH200-4R swap into my other truck made a world of difference for Interstate driving.

Wow! Big $ Gears, gear vendor, and shorten driveshaft. Makes a very nice combo though.

Re: New Rear End Gears

I have 410 gears with 32 inch tires and a gear vendor. I wouldn't want higher gears in rear end.
I would put in gear vendor first and see how you like gearing.

Re: New Rear End Gears

Got the truck back on the 24th. Took it out for a shakedown run the next day to Soldotna, Ak. Had a bunch of stop and go traffic all the way there (about 280 miles) averaged 11.5 m.p.g. all the way there. On the way back though it was smooth sailing all the way home with the cruise set at 68 and actually got even better gas mileage of 14.5 MPG!!!

Went from LT215/85R16 tires, 4:10 rear end gears and 454/TH400 getting 7.5mpg to 3.54 gears and a gearvendors overdrive unit almost doubled my highway mileage. around town I'm only getting about 8-10 depending on how heavy my foot is.

Nice numbers on your trip, I like my gear vendor too. Is yours the under/over drive?

Nice to see some results and a happy customer after investing some coin in his rig...

I just found out about Gear Vendors splitter/OD unit and want one for my sm465 in the worst way!

Cool, those six forward speeds sure take a lot of load off the engine.

Is your truck 2wd or 4x4 because it would probably be cheaper or about the same to switch to a nv4500
