Just built a new motor for my 69 c10

I was on the fence, to buy or to build. So glad I built.
350 bored .040 over.
Summit vortec style heads, which are dart iron eagles.
Zero deck with 9.9 compression.
221-221 @.50 duration. .470 .470 lift
Perfprer intake and headers.
I had it broke in on a dyno.
333 to at 5200 rpm, 388 ft pounds of tourqe at 3700 rpm.
It was a great experience, that dyno puts a beat down on a motor!! Everything went great.
My 7 year old son and I built the motor together and my dad was with me on the dyno day.
My son and I swapped motors last weekend and went for the first ride together.
It is cheaper to buy, but I wouldn't change the way we went.

Yes there is something to be said about the satisfaction of building an engine, firing it up and having everything work well. Those are some respectable power numbers too.

I would love to see a graph of your dyno pull. Most interested in the Torque graph.

Re: Just built a new motor for my 69 c10

So rewarding to do it yourself and even better that your son and dad were involved!

Looks like a great motor for a truck with 300+ foot pounds at 2000 rpm it seems and from 4200-5200 over 300 hp.

I bet the truck runs great and is a hoot to drive!

Re: Just built a new motor for my 69 c10

That's exactly what I was interested in. A strong flat torque curve starting at 2K. Should make the truck run great.

Truck does run really good, I put a 2000 stall in it too. The cam specs say 1700-5700 rpm.
It took me awhile to pick out a cam, I'm happy with it.

Who makes the cam? We put the Performer 204/214 @ .050 and an 1800 rpm converter in my kids Jimmy project. Performer intake, JET Q-jet and some 2 1/2" 'vette rams horns. Hope the curve looks like yours even if the peaks aren't as high!

Curious about the "Iron Eagle" Summit Vortec heads made by Dart.

Re: Just built a new motor for my 69 c10

They are vortec style heads. It's the same as the 165cc dart heads but with the vortec intake bolt pattern. They are 170cc heads because they took a little out on the top of the intake runner.
Summit sells the summit brand dart 165cc head with 72cc chamber and the summit vortec style heads with 67cc chamber. I just went with the vortec because I wanted more compression.
They are made by dart, I called dart and talked to the about it. Also, I looked up the numbers on the summit heads and it took to to darts website. If you look at them on summits page and click on repair parts, they are all dart parts.

Re: Just built a new motor for my 69 c10

Sweet! That's the info I was looking for. Seem like a good set of heads. I'm gonna be in the market for heads in the next year and am comparing a bunch of different heads.

Re: Just built a new motor for my 69 c10

I think you have yourself a great motor there, the dyno numbers are perfect for these old trucks. I prefer a roller cam but that's no biggie as long as you use the right oil and keep it changed.
To me 300-350 hp with a lot of low end torque is perfect for these heavy trucks. It makes them really fun to drive but not over bearing where you are always on edge.
