Cool! Thanks man. Yeah, I've never been a fan of these aluminum wheels. The caps are from a '67 Impala or Chevelle. Maybe they used them on both.

The caps are really cool and what an original idea to use them with aluminum rims. I have the same set of caps on my 64 SWB fleet with black steel wheels and I love them. I thought about painted the wheels body color. I was told they belong to 1965/1966 Chevelles but I think they were put on more than that. Great work!!!

Anything new on this truck? I love what you've done. Gives me hope for my '77 (which looks strikingly similar.. )

Great work. I really dig it. Subscribing for future motivation.

Re: Comin over to the sqaure bodies with a '78 Silverado!

Pretty Cool Diesel. Looks good.

The diesel brought back a story one of the techs told me at work the other day that made me laugh. Back in the day when the 350 Diesel was new this tech was fresh on the scene at a Olds dealership. He got handed a Olds to work on that had leaky head gaskets (no surprise back then). The block was trashed so another engine was ordered up to which he put the original intake and IP back on it. He proceeded to fire up the engine and it jumped right to life and started to race to a very high RPM. Attempts to shut the engine down failed. Key off, still running. Pulled battery cables, still running. He even killed the fuel source by cutting a hose. Still racing. ???? Now he's got a crowd coming to see what the heck is wailing away in his stall. Stuffing shop rags through the intake just sucked them in and spit them out of the exhaust shredded. He tried to choke it off with his own hands and about got them stuck. Nothing would seal the intake off he could find. 20 minutes went by of this poor engine screaming away finally started to kill itself. A painfull rod knock developed and within minutes the block was ventilated by a couple of pistons jumping out the side of the block.

Mind you I'm dying of laughter at this point of the story, but the question was still there: Why was the engine still running even without fuel? My tech described that they looked the engine over once it killed itself and found it was just about out of oil. So it spun a bearing and then busted from there. They figured out that engine had been running on the oil as a fuel source even after the fuel line was cut. The engine had just been filled with oil when he installed it. As it turns out GM had made a change and the new long block coupled with the earlier intake allowed oil to be sucked in through something like an unused EGR passage. It had it's own fuel source so it went to to a critical mass running until it ran out of oil or died through oil starvation to the bearings. After that one, they kept a steel plate handy they could bolt down to the intake and choke it out.

I bet other 350 diesels died that way. Which combined with those that got yanked for a gasser when frustrations got high makes a truck like this more special. Great job for keeping a part of GM history running.

Haha! I'm sure there are lots of diesels that have died that way. It's really funny to YouTube runaway diesel. Lots of laughs.

Thanks for the comments guys! Nothing to much lately. She is my daily driver and my '60 has been taking all my time lately. Probably won't do anything noticeable to my truck until next summer. Maybe I'll finally finish the onboard air. Haha

Re: Comin over to the sqaure bodies with a '78 Silverado!

Haha we had a riding lawn mower do that once, nothing we did would kill it and it ran for about 20 minutes like that. Eventually when it died we checked the oil and it had a ton of gas in it, so every time the piston came up it coated the cylinder in enough gas to keep it running.

Re: Comin over to the sqaure bodies with a '78 Silverado!

Hey guys,

Not a whole lot new. Since I retired her from daily driving duties and all the time I've been spending on my '60 lately, she's kind of been sitting' with the exception of occasional work and towing my camper to go camping.

I did, however, score a factory tach gauge set for $75 which I cleaned and installed yesterday. I finally have a tach that works now! And that's probably the 100th time I've had that dumb dash bezel off. Haha.

Pics soon....

If you mean the whole cluster, mine's broken in the same place. Extremely common.

Thanks, it's not finished. I plan to put a factory air gauge next to it for onboard air but then I really need to figure out how to make a plastic lens for it. And then I have to make some sort of housing to mount lights in so they light up with the rest of the dash.

Nice truck man, looks just like my '79 when i first got it. It even had the 5.7 diesel. A lot has changed since then! First thing i did was yank that sorry turd of a motor out. But i'm glad to hear you've got ahold of a reliable one Happy trails...

Re: Comin over to the sqaure bodies with a '78 Silverado!

Well, this past week I sold my '60 Suburban. So that means it is time to give the little brown truck some love. As soon as summer is over, I am tearing the front end off and fully rebuilding the front suspension and steering. I am thinking of going with a quick ratio steering box from classic industries. Anyone have any thoughts or comments about that? Anyone used one?

Re: Comin over to the sqaure bodies with a '78 Silverado!

Don't know about others, but I would not want my '76 C10 step steering any faster than it does. It's no race car. On the other hand, my '89 S10 with ABS and sport suspension option handles great! I can't get over how big the difference is between the two trucks.
Weight distribution on the S10 must be WAY better.

Given your location, I would look into getting a Redhead steering box. They are relatively local (PNW), and have a really good rep.
