New project 55 GMC

I'm new to this section of the board giving up the 67 to 72 chevy's for a bit for my new 55 GMC project. I have everything to convert her over to a chevy, like the dash, grill, and hood. Here are a couple pics.

NICE, looks like a very solid truck. I love the big window. Besides switching over to Chevy. What are your plans for it?

Re: New project 55 GMC

Hey thanks, I like the big back window too, its a very solid old truck can't believe how little rust there is. The plan for right now is to also drop it down some but I'd like to keep the straight axle, more less build it nostalgic. Black with the traditional white to orange flames, something like that. The plans will probably change a few times down the road. Thanks

Re: New project 55 GMC

Not to talk you out of anything if you truly want to do it, but the truck will likely be worth more as a GMC than as a Chevy. It will certainly attract more attention.

IMO you got to leave it GMC, you already have some hard to get options, radio, hood bird, deluxe heater, big back window.

Welcome, Looks like a great start. It's yours but I'd keep it a GMC too.

Re: New project 55 GMC

Nice looking truck. I'd be keeping it GMC as well.
When I bought my 59 I had thought about changing it to a 55-57 front end. But there are not many 58-59 apaches at the shows and my truck gets lots of attention as it's a bit different then the rest.

Just about? I sure would leave it GMC too, even tho I need some of your dash pieces! That hood is beautiful with the "bird"!

I have much more experience with '70-'72 GMC's but I have learned so much from these experts here since I got my '55 around 10 months ago. I think you can use your bumper and the GMC "bullets" are separate pieces that attach to it. The bullets are available aftermarket from various vendors. I have never seen aftermarket grilles, but used ones come up for sale now and then.

Check out this site, http://www.oldgmctrucks.com

I have seen at least two of the grilles for sale on there in the last several months. I am lucky the grille on mine is good. Just missing the "100" emblem.

I want to do my '55 similar to your idea too kinda era with the beam axle front with some old school stuff and the I-6.

Later---DAC

Re: New project 55 GMC

I also vote to keep most of the GMC stuff. I'm going to have a hybrid front clip like this truck though, sort of half and half.
