Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up

Since it got really dusty from being in the garage such a long time it was time to give it it's first wash! Luckily it didn't leak any water, except for around the top of the drivers side door a bit because its out from the top of the cab slightly.

I still have a lot of lose ends to tie up, like the computer thinks its in drive all the time, only the front brakes work, and a power steering fluid leak. Also I have to get the crank position sensor relearned because it has a code P1336. The scanner at the shop I took it to won't initiate the relearn procedure with the computer thinking its in drive all the time. Today I decided to investigate the problem and found that the wires to the neutral saftey switch were never connected to the computer so I have to get them hooked up (whoops).

Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up

Forgot to post this. I took the 69' to a car show on Memorial Day! Everyone was really interested in the engine and how it was installed and such. Anyway here's some pics.

--Also does anyone have any Ideas on why I can't keep my front brakes working??? I converted to front discs, power brakes and a new CPP proportioning valve for the setup. I bent up new lines from the master cyl to the proportioning valve I have the one going from the rear of the cyl to the front brakes and from the front of the cyl to the rear brakes. I started off by bleeding the rear brakes, got those working. Then moved to the front passenger side wheel and bled that one and then to the drivers side wheel. Then I discovered that the shuttle valve moved forward and cut off the front brakes. So i reset it and bled and bled and bled to get any air out. Now when I press the brakes it feels normal then there's a sort of a click or pop and then the fronts kick in and start working. While driving the shuttle valve seems like it moves forward or something and then I only have rears if I reset it I get fronts for a while then it moves forward again! Sorry for the long message....

Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up

The front of the master cylinder goes through the front of the proportioning valve and then to the front brakes. The rear goes to the rear. I looked through your pictures until I found one that showed the brake lines and it looks to me like you have them flipped.

I also noticed that you mounted your CPP prop valve low on the firewall. I'm not sure why but if you would have used the bracket to mount it on the mc mounting bolt the lines would have fell in place. I used a slightly different booster and mc so I had to bend up a different rear mc to valve line than was supplied with the kit but the front lines were perfect as is.

Here's mine using a CPP prop valve.

Thanks for the reply! Your absolutely right I bent the lines backward. I guess the reason I did this is because on my 72 GMC 3/4 ton thats the way the lines go must be different for 1/2 tons because I looked at another 1/2 ton stepside today and it had the lines like yours so I must need to replumb those lines. Thanks!

Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up

Well I installed the bed wood and strips today temporarily until I get a fuel pressure regulator for the inline fuel pump setup that I need to install. But for the moment its complete until I have to install that pump.

I ran the vent line for the gas tank up the stake pocket but I need a filter or something for the end of it so water doesn't get down it....

Couldn't put in some bolts because of the gas tank and filler neck.

Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up

Use a check ball style vent for a motorcycle. That's exactly what I did on my truck. My truck has sat outside 24/7 since Nov. 2006 and I never got water in my tank.

I don't want to mess up your thread with pics of my truck, so check out post # 202 & 203.

Your truck came out beautiful, I love it!

Thanks! I didn't even pay attention to it matching my hair till about a month ago which is funny. I'm going to take it to a car show tomorrow and see how many other 67-72's I see since there are quite a number of them up here just not restored or in good shape.

Thanks, I thought I would never see the end of this project but it's just about done. I'll see if I can find one of those motorcycle type check valves up here at a shop or order one.

Glad to help.

The bed looks fantastic. I'm guessing you won't be stacking concrete blocks in there anymore. What kind of wood did you use?

If you can't find one local, they're on ebay too (this is where I got mine.)

Ya not a work truck anymore....I'm actually not sure what kind of wood it is when I originally got the truck for free it came with it brand new.

Thanks, I was thinking of just lowering it since an air bad system would be $$$...

I just used a DA Sander, Wire Wheel on a grinder and a grinder on heavy rust or welds.

Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up

Well fixed my brake problem I did as basketcase said and plumbed new lines from the master cylinder to the proportioning valve. This completely fixed the problem now I have good front and rear brakes. Here's a pic:

Re: 1969 Chevy Stepside Restoration/Build up

I installed a Compustar Pro Security System In the truck last weekend. Now I can remote start it (yes pointless). The main reason I got it was because it has a very good security system. Door sensors, hood, shock sensor, and starter kill relay. Anyway seems to work good. It's pretty funny being able to remote start such a old truck. Still need to fix a power steering leak and install the rear view mirror on the windshield. I'll put up some pictures of the security system tomorrow.
