Project BACK IN BLACK

I took 3 weeks off before starting my new job last week, so I decided it was time to freshen up the daily driver. It was rusty as hell, the truck was full of bondo from a PO maaco job, and paint was peeling off the hood/roof......it was in dire need of some TLC. So I had 15 days to thrash on it in my lil two car garage. I put new inner/outer cab corners and rockers, two new doors, new bed, several patches for rusty spots, new windshield, all new rubber, all new trim...yada yada...and then painted it satin black. I was pressed for time so didn't take a lot of pics, but here's what I took.

(before pics are a few yrs old & hide the rot really well):

and.......DONE. Only thing left to do is spray in the bed liner, but I haven't decided who's materials I want to use yet. Hopefully get that done in a couple weeks. The bumpers look like hell now compared to the rest of the truck, so they'll get redone this spring when I tackle the interior refresh......and then the final touch will be some 15x10 corvette rallies. And maybe a tko 5 speed to replace the muncie. And maybe a lil nitrous. I'm sick. :|

Looks Good! you can use a "Mother's Powerball" on those bumpers to spice them up. They work really well.

Thanks! The bumpers are unfortunately beyond help, they're pitted & chipped up pretty bad and it's rusting underneath those spots. I'll just live with em until I can sneak some repops when the wife isn't looking.

Just what I needed to hear....I'm in enough trouble with the wife as it is!

Thanks Keith! The amount of time those bed & doors saved me was immense!

It's actually SPI epoxy primer. It's not "designed" to be a topcoat, but I was recommended this by some guys that have sprayed their rat rods with it and has held up great for several years under 24/7 UV exposure. Best part is if I decide I want a pretty color someday (likely), I just have to scuff, seal & shoot. I'm really liking the satin look for now though, I'm shocked at all the head turns & thumbs up I've gotten with it in the last week.

I would also check out Classic Parts in KC.
They sell Tri-Plus bumpers,... and you might be able to save the truck freight costs, with a road trip to KC.

Re: Project BACK IN BLACK

All that fresh metal and new paint work must have been pretty heavy. It looks like it lowered the truck about 3 inches in the front and 4 in the back.

There was a LOT of rust.

It's got 2.5" spindles up front and 1 coil cut off the stock springs. Out back is shackles and hangers with the stock leafs. The tires are 275/60/15 front and back.

Re: Project BACK IN BLACK

I had kinda forgotten to update this thread....whoops! I'll do a better job.

I did get the bedliner sprayed in before winter hit. I ended up using Southern Polyurethanes again for the materials and am thrilled with how it turned out. Cost me 3x less than a professional would have charged.

I also got new seat upholstery for Christmas and I got a chance to put it in a few weeks ago. That was waaaaay more painful of a process than I ever imagined! It didn't turn out perfect, but good enough for a driver. Next time I'll be dropping it off at the upholstery shop and writing a check.

Your bedliner and seat cover turned out great. But is it silver in the middle or blue?

Thanks! The seat is black/silver. It's a really bad picture.....once the weather breaks I'll clean it up and snap some better ones.
