Re: 350 rebuild.

I think there is a manifold to swap a Vortec headed engine with a TBI into your truck.

You will get a roller cam, and alot better heads. To me in today's world the roller cam in a necessity because oils lack zinc.

This site seems to have a lot of good info on TBI engines.

Re: 350 rebuild.

You will likely get more responses down in the engine forum. Lots of good info down there.

Re: 350 rebuild.

If you go Vortec heads you can stay TBI using the export van Vortec manifold. They retained the TBI. They are pricey, only available from GM I think. The TBI system can feed up to about 500hp. For more torque you could do the 383 job on it. Just the heads will give you 50 hp. Change cam, and on from there, depending on where you want to stop.

Re: 350 rebuild.

I'm assuming the engine is in your 94. Looking at some other forums, it seems there is some power to be had in the TBI engines. It also looks like opening a can of worms too. From a practical standpoint, I think a new crate motor and some lower gears would do it for you. Especially on a daily driver. Right now, Jegs has a 87-95 crate motor for $1600. I don't think you could match that with a trip to the machine shop and building it yourself.

Re: 350 rebuild.

Looks like you can get a vortec for about the same money. Those intakes are super pricey. Another option is a TBI to 4 barrel adapter. The vortecs do have an extra 50 hp. I don't know how much of that comes from the roller cam and how much comes from the heads. You'll still probably need your ecm flashed or add a super chip or something. From what I understand, the 88-95 engines were designed for low end, which is why they stall out about 4000 rpm. You may not even notice a difference when it's all said and done.

Honestly, I already have a vortec to tbi intake, and this trucks a pig, burns oil, down on power, and needs a headgasket, so I think a refresh would make me feel a difference, but, I may get a junkyard vortec from a running truck, and just put it in, cheap and simple.
