I've always admired those men who served "for the duration." During my time, we had at least a rough idea when we were coming home. They knew they weren't coming home until it was over.

All Great Heroes along with all who served and made the ultimate sacrifice. 3 of those Heroes raising the Stars and Stripes were later killed in combat.

My uncle whom passed away about 10 years ago was wounded and disabled on Iwo, he had a life long painful limp but never once did he complain.

Re: Today 75 years ago on Iwo Jima...

What would be 25 years ago, my work took me to Edmond, OK for a training conference being held at a large hotel. While there, I discovered that survivors of the invasion of Iwo Jima were holding their 50 year reunion. After learning this, I totally forgot about the training conference I was there for and attended the Iwo Jima reunion.

What an honor and humbling experience it was. The stories, the laughter, the tears.

There are not many of that generation left. I thank GOD for allowing me that time with them.

My dad had five Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart from WWII. I pray we don't forget what they fought and died for.

The last man to be correctly identified (Harold Keller, identified in 2019) is from Brooklyn, Iowa and is related to a lady that my wife volunteers with at the local Historical Society.

One of my Chiefs in the Navy, who was also one of my Airman at one time, had an uncle who died on Iwo Jima. As a Chief he got to attend a flag raising ceremony there on Iwo with a few of the Iwo vets put on by the Marines. He posted pics on facebook a while back.

Those guys were tough to the bone. My neighbor was a WWII vet. Bomber mechanic stationed in England. Told me about working on some of the first jet powered planes as well. Mr. Beard was an interesting fellow. Passed away a few years ago at the age of 94. Wish I could have spent a bit more time with him.

Oh, one other thing... When I was in Iraq, we weren't even supposed to fly the flag.

Some of us did anyway. But it shows you how times have changed.
