|
67 C30 front drum removal?
Any of you guys had the front drum brakes apart on one of the things? I can’t even get past the dust cap. I have had people tell me that it screws on and some people tell me that it is presses on. Who knows the truth?

Take a large flat screw driver and put it at the lip of the cap and the hub. Tap the screwdriver with a hammer until it slips behind the lip on the cap. Then you can gently pry it out the rest of the way. The cap might bend a little but they are easily straightened back out. The dust caps aren't anything special as far as I know. Never seen a "screw on" style dust cap on any 67-72 truck.

They don’t have lips on them like on a c10, they have almost a hex look to them.

I've taken them apart but it's been a long time ago. I think if the dust cover screwed on, I'd remember that. Rockauto shows them as slip fit. If they are,
take the wheel off and look for a hole in the side of that center hub. Put a screwdriver through the hole and tap it with a hammer while prying on the cap. It'll come off. My 1942 1.5 ton had screw type like that, never seen it on the later though.
Don't loose them, they are hard to find. This type of pipe wrench always worked well for me. |

Good morning. Assuming you're still looking for info on front drum removal...
On my '67 GMC C3500, the front drums simply pulled off of the front hub. The hub alone, is what's held onto the spindle via the wheel bearing nut behind the dust cap. (my dust cap popped off like seen on normal RWD vehicles) Here's a photo where if you look closely you can see the drum and hub are two separate parts. |

He doesn't have the type you have grumptruck, his is Budd type wheels. The hex shape head is there for a reason, to be unscrewed.

Now I do in fact have an update. The dust cap unscrews. Now let the front brake festivities begin!
