Air filter issue

1972 C10 w/ 350

I just installed a new crate 350, came with the Edelbrock intake, and 600cfm carbuerator and air filter.

My other engine used a spacer above the Quadrajet of about 4", my new one does not have this.

My problem is the air filter is now lower and is pushing tight against the distributor, which I do not like. I know an air filter spacer would solve that problem, but would it be beneficial to try to get one and if so, where?

I no longer have the old one.

Re: Air filter issue

Jegs or summit have spacers or you can buy a different base (that's what I'd do) They sell different height bases to clear your carb wich will raise it above the distributor. I bought one from summit for $15.00 to clear my HEI but I didn't record the part number.

Re: Air filter issue

BW,

So you would suggest a spacer under the carb and not one on top of the carb?

It depends on what you want to accomplish. A spacer under the carb will usually increase low- to mid-range torque, whereas a spacer between the carb and air cleaner will have minimal effects. The under-carb spacer may necessitate re-tuning your A/F mixture.

Re: Air filter issue

While a riser will lift your air cleaner up a bit you might just need to install a heat spacer under the carb. It gets hot where you live and you'll need a heat spacer to keep your carb cool.
Riser.

Re: Air filter issue

geezer,

thanks, would it hurt to use both of these, a 2" air cleaner and a 1" heat riser, because this needs about 3" to clear the HEI?

That'll work.
Did you know you can also buy offset air cleaner bases to clear your hei.
Here's a bunch.

Re: Air filter issue

Geezer is right, a thick carb gasket or spacer between the carb & intake will help insulate the carb. to raise it 3" you will have to use a spacer between the carb & filter base unless your filter base has a lot of drop down. Pic is an Edelbrock 7516 intake & Eddy AVS carb with HEI

Re: Air filter issue

This pic is almost identical to what I have, 2" will move the bottom of the pan to just above the distributor, but I would not mind being a little higher, which would involve using both of them, mine also has the retaining plate on the dizzy, which makes it higher than this pic

Re: Air filter issue

That's a drop base cleaner. A stock one would likely clear without a spacer.

Re: Air filter issue

The spacers under the air filters are all over the salvage lots. They used them for years in all types of trucks. The ones with throttle body injection all used the same dia. spacers. There are many diff. thicknesses.
