68 Fuel gauge

My fuel gauge is now pegged in no mans land on the gauge like at 3 o'clock area on the gauge. Meaning its not doing anything to tell me what amount of fuel. So do you think its the gauge itself or is there another culprit for me to look for?

Re: 68 Fuel gauge

Locate the FUEL terminal on the fuse panel and run a jumper from it to ground with the key on. No you won't blow a fuse, Your gauge should return to empty. If it does this means that you have lost the path to ground from the sending unit in the tank.

Run a temporary wire from the sending unit terminal to the FUEL terminal on the fuse panel. If the gauge reads normal then the wire from the fuse panel to the tank sender is open and will have to be redone. Key on of course.

If you still have no reading then the sender is not grounded or the resistor in the sender is open and will have to be fixed or replaced. Quite often the sending unit has just lost it's ground to the frame

Post back with your results.
