Re: 1990 electric instrument cluster/speedo

i am almost (85%) done with my ls style swap. i sold my 01 silverado to get my second 87chevy. this time i stayed away from big cube's and went FI. anyway, i found this thread about factory electronic speedo's and actually lucked up finding one in good looking shape. got that biotch for 20 bucks muhahaha i already reset the odometer to what it needed to be at, got the trip button to function correctly, now all i need to do is get the cluster in the truck and test it out. i talked to the electrician at my job (chevy dealership) and he said pretty much what you guys said... run the wire from the computer to the speedo. well thats what im going to do. i need to figure out what all the differences in pin locations from the 87 truck and 90-91 burban.
till then, clint

p.s. heres a link to the swap

Re: 1990 electric instrument cluster/speedo

woot, i found 2 of those rare clusters today at the wrecking yard, one in mint, unpilfered though shape, and a 2nd one with a cracked housing . on that on i just took the speedo... so now on to the testing. since i have 2 complete clusters, and one elec. speedo, i will use the seperate speedo as my test unit. i soldered wires directly to the corresponding - + and vss. tomarrow i will post up my findings.

Re: 1990 electric instrument cluster/speedo

sob, couldnt get the speedo to work. with the vss wire hooked up or not i get the same result: needle maxing out at the resint needle or maxing out the end of the gauge. no idea why it does that.
i did hook up the neg and pos backwards but i switched it and this is what i got. i didnt try repinning the 87 cluster connector, im probally gona ditch the money saving idea and man up and get the autometer gauges.any help on saving me 500 bucks would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 1990 electric instrument cluster/speedo

Just re-pin the wiring. It is really easy. If you know someone that has ALDATA or go by the local GM dealer and speak with a technician. I went to the local GMC dealer and asked if they had some wiring diagrams for my 81 Blazer and a 1991 Suburban and they spent the time to look up the information and printed out 10-15 pages for me that day. I was really impressed with the service and wished I could return and buy a car from them for the appreciation.

Did you solder the wire directly to the three prongs coming off of the electric speedometer and disconncect the printed circuit?

no, i soldered it to the board.. il post up a picture sometime soon .. it works like it should oh yeah...ive been talking to ryan and he got me in the right directon about the water temp sensor (use a autometer electric, short sweep 260* sender) and it works fine, a stock 5.3 oil sender will work fine. the gauge reading is off, but correct in the direction, meaning the printed 30 should be 40 and so on... i dont know if i can remove the white paint and stick a decal on there or something... we will see

thanks
clint

Re: 1990 electric instrument cluster/speedo

As soon as my ebay winnings show up I'm going to be doing a retro fit of a tach/fuel gauge & air pressure gauge into my '90 burb's electric speedo cluster. I'll be doing a write up with pics for y'all to see how I do it.
Here's a pic of the donor cluster I'm taking the 2 gauges from......

Re: 1990 electric instrument cluster/speedo

I've already received the white face overlays for the gauges from whitegauges.net so they'll match the rest of my gauges.
