I cant tell for sure. Is that a red reflector in the A on those last two trucks pictured?

Re: photos of 60-61 Chevy truck with factory paint

Without a build sheet, how do we know what color our early trucks were? My 60 has original paint, but is SO faded from being parked outside in the Idaho desert all of its life I dont know if its red...or orange.

Take off a door handle, side view mirror, or weather stripping around the door. They were painted before assembly, and the paint will still be visible under those areas.

... or... apparently, the tag on the kick panel!

I mean no offense, but this paint does not look original. Worn/faded yes, but not typical of factory paint with similar heavy abuse over time.
Anyway, I'm guessing red. Easy enough to take some compound and buff a small spot to see the true color.

Re: photos of 60-61 Chevy truck with factory paint

should be a plate on the driver side kick panel by the vent. If it's there at the bottom should have the paint code.

Re: photos of 60-61 Chevy truck with factory paint

Its a one family owned vehicle, so I know it original. I may be green with these chevy trucks, but have restored numerous $70k - $110k 69 mustangs (one being an all original sheet metal 428 super cobra jet mach 1) and own a fleet of 17 pre 70 vehicles - I know how to tell a repaint. There are 2 colors that are close to what is shown under the original rubber seals, but looking at what has been shared here that was scanned and on a pc screen is not going to be an accurate representation of the actual original color.

So back to my original question, Thanks 61k10 and Brad64, i will look for that plate. I appreciate the info!

Re: photos of 60-61 Chevy truck with factory paint

Like they said above, there's a tag just below the vent on the drivers side( inside) that has the paint and trim codes. This is not a vin tag. A paint code will be stamped in the tag.One thing that kinda gives a sense of a repaint is lack of tailgate lettering . Just saying it's easy to be fooled on these trucks for og paint. Not criticizing , I like 60 4x4s and can't wait to see what you do with it.

Re: photos of 60-61 Chevy truck with factory paint

I wont be doing much with the body...I bought it from my father in the early the 90's, but it was stored at least 15 of those years. This year I've been focusing on another cobra jet mustang for my wife and a 67 camaro i bought last yr, but I need to tear my daily driver (an avalanche) down this winter for a trans rebuild/upgrade and want a 4x4 for the winter. Otherwise I wouldnt be working on the 60 right now.

I ripped the original 2 barrel intake and rochester off the '68 327 thats in it this morning, it was always a great running truck but the years of wear and the old gas sitting in it over a decade was the nail in the coffin. I'm putting a performer with a vac 600 holley on it tomorrow, hoping it will still give me decent gas mileage. Also shelving the points distributor (it has the spring oil cap on it for oiling...odd) for an oem HEI unit. Nothing fancy with this one...I have shelves of double pumpers, half a dozen msd 6al's, etc, its hard not to go crazy with aftermarket stuff but I want it to be a reliable somewhat stock truck. I like this truck the way it looks, it earned all those battle scars and I dont want another trailer queen or worry about scratching it.

My father had to beef up the rear bumper to haul the farm equipment we had, it usually pulled an 8 wheeled lowboy with a triple disc harrow on it. I removed the 2 5/16 class 5 ball off it...and mounted the hitch last year just to move my stuff. I had to torch all the bracing under the bumper that was added. This truck pulled its ass off, all while having 2000 pounds in the bed. They dont build them like that anymore.

Re: photos of 60-61 Chevy truck with factory paint

Thanks for the info regarding the plate. It is Grenadier Red, color RPO715A - no two tone. It also has the trim rpo258a, but I'm not sure what that is for the 60. I see later years show that as a deluxe seat? Any ideas?

Oh, and I spoke with my father this morning regarding the tailgate, why it may have been missing the lettering. He said this tailgate was one he bought from the chevy dealer in the early 70's after destroying the first one. The one that is one there is SEVERELY beaten, and I mean BAD. Not from rust, just farm use. Workers put the tailgate down and use it as a workbench....for 30 yrs.

The longer I spend on this site the more I want to start fixing up the body...
