1971 Original Valve covers?

I'm trying to figure out what the original valve covers looked like on a 71 Chevy C10 350 engine.

We need to replace the ones we have - which are off a '73.

My closest guess is something like this reproduction: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Transdapt-S...cAAOSwcqxcGHSg

As a secondary question, what about the sticker that was on it? I found a forum string on here, but it was talking about a '69 model, and I didn't see clear verification of which sticker should've been on a '71? It's a Cheyenne - but I don't think that part matters for this.

Like this. This is the passenger side which has the brake vacuum hole and the driver side has an oil fill in the rear and PVC hole to the front

This would be the crankcase breather hole on the passenger side one. The tube that runs to the base of the air cleaner.

Re: 1971 Original Valve covers?

Is the oil fill on the driver’s side just a cap like newer ones, or is it an oil tube that sticks up?

Re: 1971 Original Valve covers?

Depends. Some people still have the oil fill tube in place, others only have an oil cap.

Re: 1971 Original Valve covers?

My 70 just has a cap no tube. I think a filler tube would conflict with the brake booster

Re: 1971 Original Valve covers?

My 72 w/ a 350 and power brakes had the oil fill tube in the rear of the stock drivers side valve cover when I got it. Never had any interference with the original stock booster or the setup I replaced it with. I removed the tube when I bought new valve covers.

Oh yeah, right. The vacuum comes out of the intake... duh. It's been a long time since I've had a truck with stock air cleaner and couldn't recall what went there. Now I can't picture if my Edelbrock covers have a hole there. But that's the '71 valve cover sticker.

All the 4wds I've had came with oil fill tube. I've had 2wds come with one, too, but not sure on the rhyme or reason. The cap on the valve cover would be rubber with 710 on it painted orange

Re: 1971 Original Valve covers?

Nice! I'll reach out to him about the decal.

Coincidentally, I just scored valve covers off flea-bay - with the oil fill tube. From the picture I can see that it came with a bend in it that probably solved any interference the brake booster.

See below:

Re: 1971 Original Valve covers?

Reviving this thread for a moment - with a follow-up question.

Does anyone know where I can find the grommet for that oil filler tube. I'm about to strip the paint off the new covers I've got, but I'd like all new rubber bits so I don't have to stress about destroyed (or cracked) parts.

Re: 1971 Original Valve covers?

I just found a grommet for that fitment last week
Original #3982983 came out of old valve cover.
If you search that number you will find them asking anywhere from $15-$20 on up.
The crossover update number from GM is 10108402 and you can find them on ebay for about $2.50 That's where I got mine and it was an exact fit. It shows that updated number for newer applications. Summit also has them listed as 10108402: and I ran across a Dorman number 42306 but never verified if that was the same
