keeping animals out of my truck

I got a old s10 I leave at the back of my property. Something has been going in it shredding the rollbar padding and pooping inside of it, I'm guessing raccoon as the droppings are like the size of a large cat black in color and full of seeds. It's the truck that is set as my avatar picture so can't really roll up the Windows as there isn't any or a roof for that matter

I made sure the tarp was really tight a few weeks ago and today found more poop and shredded stuff, kinda want to detour whatever it is before it goes after the wiring thankfully that hasn't been a issue yet

Go with mothballs or is there something better, it's a off road truck so if it smells like mothballs or lemon juice or whatever don't really care

Google only tells me how to keep animals out of the engine area

Re: keeping animals out of my truck

It appears that your truck has been chosen to be a latrine by that raccoon(s). Once they find a spot, they usually keep to it. Be extremely careful when cleaning the scat out of your truck. Raccoons are a known carrier of roundworm, and the dust, if old scat is disturbed, can be inhaled, and/or swallowed.

Re: keeping animals out of my truck

Electric fence will keep them out .You could buy a solar charger for a hundred bucks if the electricity isn't close. Two strands of wire and some push in posts and your all set. Always put this around my sweet corn patch to keep them out. Relocating them to coon heaven is a good idea too.

Maybe I'll just leave a entire gallon in there, just like some holes in the top so it continues to smell

Last night I put out two traps like that, this morning they were both closed so something tried to get the food but failed. What sucks about the live a trap is there also a ton of possums around here too but I doubt they are the culprit

Can't really shoot a gun it's a semi residential area. I'll keep trying to trap one, caught one Last year and left it in the trap when I went to work figured I would relocate him when I got home and he was gone. Thinking maybe someone jumped the fence and let him out I reviewed the security camera and he managed to smash himself out of the cage door. Unfortunately the cameras do not go on the s10 as I figured no one is going to steal it

Try some Liquid Fence Deer and Rabbit repellent spray. Not sure it will work on Raccoons but it works for Deer, Rabbits, & Ground Hogs.

Dogs! a pack of dogs that live outside, and make the truck their feeding spot.

Re: keeping animals out of my truck

Ended up catching it, but it got out again. Dragged the cage like 2 feet, pooped in it and somehow smashed his way out again spent a few hours reinforcing the cage door and drop bar so hopefully tonight is a success. I'll be sure to post a picture of whatever it is.

If he gets out again I may have to just buy a giant trap

I clean my 12 gauge in my back yard. It's been known to accidentally go off

At close range, a .22 short will do the trick. They don't make as much noise because they are sub-sonic when they leave the barrel, instead of super-sonic like a long rifle or magnum slug. They are also less lethal, which is why you'd have to get pretty close.

If you put a nipple from a baby bottle over the end of the barrel of a bolt-action rifle and use .22 shorts, there's very little sound at all. Never tried it myself so I can't verify how effective that actually is.

Baby bottle nipples work really good for 3 or 4 shots.

Re: keeping animals out of my truck

I take rabbits at 30 yards with my Savage bolt 22 and CCI Quiets. Head shots all day long at that range. Rather lethal also

Re: keeping animals out of my truck

Might need to be closer to get a raccoon, though, if that is the perpetrator. I think they have a fairly thick skull compared to a rabbit.

Re: keeping animals out of my truck

I had a Coon Problem and tried trapping it, I used canned cat food and it kept getting out of the trap. Then I staked down the trap and I caught it. They really get MEAN when cornered or trapped.

Yea I'm using dry cat food. Also seems like skunks and possums love it too. Including the neighbors stupid cat caught him like 6 times over the past 5 years you would think he would learn
