Re: Craigslist... a thing of the past?

Facebook's founder paid a multi-million dollar legal settlement concerning how the idea for the website was obtained. That same founder had disparaging things to say about early female users. Facebook is losing some 200,000 users per year, was recently grilled on Capitol Hill for biased treatment of members, and for the first time ever, has begun advertising itself on TV. A recent interview of another FB founder exposed how the site was "created to exploit people." The website sells every bit of data collected, gives nothing to the user, and changes policy without notice or consent. There is no customer service number or email and no way to contact the site outside of being logged in.

Now if that sounds like a "good website to belong to," there you go.

CL took down the "hooker" pages ("personals") due to a new law passed in Congress. On the surface, such a law could end all dating sites. It was passed (I assume) to limit child exploitation online and seems to have been directed at backpage.com which did host a variety of escort services, many of which were investigated by law enforcement for teen trafficking and may have posted their own ads for sting operations. The owner of backpage has been arrested for sex trafficking and that was before the new law passed. No idea on a conviction though.

I posted an ad onto CL a few weeks ago to sell off some Isuzu parts I inherited. It was a bust. The "DO NOT TEXT" line was completely ignored and not a single person read the ad, they looked at the picture and used their apparently very active imagination. Ugh....

I called the same ad into the local trading paper, I hope for more there.

Re: Craigslist... a thing of the past?

I get people not responding, both sellers and buyers everywhere I go, including here. That's just people, not a website doing that. Craigslist works if you use it and it will only become a thing of the past if people don't use it.

I must second this. I'm pretty good at doing what I say I will but sometimes even I forget to call someone back.

Craigslist is vast and I doubt it's going anywhere soon, it is also one of the very few companies not driven by greed. The owners do not bombard with ads and do not charge a membership or require credit card use (one they partner with) such as Ebay does. Craigslist owners have resisted selling the company for years even though the offers were into the billions.

Re: Craigslist... a thing of the past?

I always figure people who don't respond have it sold. If someone lists a desirable vehicle for a great price I can see them getting 100 emails and can't expect them to write back everyone and say sorry sold. I listed a towdolly for dirt cheap a while back cause I got it for free and checked my email 4 hours later and had like 20 messages. First guy who wasn't asking me to hold it or take a lower price I wrote back

Re: Craigslist... a thing of the past?

When I'm selling on Craigslist, I can usually tell if the Text is from a scammer and I don't respond.

Moreover, when I text/respond to a for sale ad I do my best to not "sound" like a scammer.

I think it helps.

I like craigslist but am usually in awe of the prices some people ask for their junk...
