Re: Hub caps on truck question

I just bought a pair of OG 64-66 hubcaps for my truck. It looks like, however, I may have later model wheels. The little "nub" that is on the center part of the wheel that generally holds the cap on, is on the outer edge of the center ring instead of the inside. Did chevy make specific wheel designs for 64-66 to match their caps? Or, will I have to make something work similar to your trick above?

Re: Hub caps on truck question

There were several different rims. The earlier rims had clips as did some of the 3/4 & 1 tons. There was also a 3 bump rim (drum brake) and a 4 bump rim (disk brake). Look at thread #79 on hubcaps

That wheel cover is absolutely wicked looking! The last time I saw anything remotely close to that cool was back in 1959 watching the chariot race in Ben Hur!

Re: Hub caps on truck question

I have been following this thread for a little while but it seems to have stalled. I finally got the 73-87 6-lug rallys cleaned and painted. Went with body color (don't use touch up paint online (dot) com) and smaller trim rings but still looking for center cap ideas. My rallys came with 6 lug 4X4 caps but of course 2 are open and they are all four pitted.

Keith, thanks for sharing but I noticed that your idea allows the cap to snal on OVER the center band(?) I was looking for something smaller that fits inside the groove. Very much small economy/police style cap. Anybody have anything new?

Haha...love it, but Ben-hur didn't have chrome. Looks like some LED's in there too.

Re: Hub caps on truck question

Thanks. I saw these but the smoothies/plain Jane caps are available for repop car rally's that have been machined for truck pattern. I have 6-lug truck rallys 73-87. They have replacements for my application but I wanted something a little different.

I had these so do not remember how much they cost but I think about .50 each

2. We centered the hubcap on the wheel then traced the outline of the hub cap on the wheel, backed off about 3/16" and installed the clips.

Attachment 824279

Hoping above all that it would work..........................

3. Tried a 1957 chevy hubcap first---------------and it worked

Attachment 824280

Would rather be lucky than good...... Wheel only with cap and trim ring

4. 57 chrome hubcap with tire

Attachment 824281

I think it looks good, just think what it will look like on a truck and the wheel painted to match the truck

5. Wheel tire, trim ring , and a painted hubcap

Attachment 824282

Now we just have to try it driving down the road but I will tell you it feels very solid and after it is installed it is hard to get the hubcap off since it is held in place by 4 clips..........when I removed it the first time it bent one of the clips back, then all you have to do is push it back in place. I think since the load will be centrifical (out ward) that the clips will work just fine, if not we could weld them in place Kieth
I know this is an old thread. I just saw it. I was wondering how well the wiring clips held up? Or if anyone has a better fix!

Re: Hub caps on truck question

Lots of cool innovative ideas but I ended up using a centercap from mid 90s wheel. Little shorter than 70s. Turned out okay.

Re: Hub caps on truck question

Just saying, I wanted 8" steel wheels on my ' 64 panel but still use dog dish hubcaps. I got wheel vintiques. Centered the dog dish hubcaps on the wheels and marked the outline of the hub cap on the wheel. Then welded three tabs on the wheel inside the marked line. They've stayed on there for over 10,000 miles.

Re: Hub caps on truck question

I ran into the same issue with my truck. The '66 C20 wheels had small clips on the inside ring of the rim that held the cap in place, or so I've been told. So, I bought the caps that fit my wheels. '67-early seventies caps may not be 'right' for my truck, but I like them.
