1970 K5 Bumpers/ Stock or ?

Really thinking the resto through, and am considering going with stock bumpers. I like the look but I know I'm going to need more strength and longevity. I really like Kurt's setup, with the winch mount and all. Ran across the ones made by Kennesaw Mountain, and like the look of the one on a K5. It was a customized stage 2 wincher w/ shackle mounts. Don't need the prerunner stuff, or etc. Read some bad feedback about Kennesaw mt, and was looking for more info. Any help guy's? Kurt, sure you can't hook me up with that setup? Heh, Heh! Just really want the right setup/look for my K5!

Re: 1970 K5 Bumpers/ Stock or ?

Not a bad looking bumper if that's what works for you.
(in a functional way)

Sounds like your still waffling back and forth on the style your looking for, both have their advantages and both look good IMO.

Do you weld?
How do you want your bumper to perform?
Remember that stock bumpers are pretty wimpy.

Burt4x4 bought his bumper from Kennesaw Mountain and can tell you about his experience.

Just noticed a post in the 4x4 section on winch bumpers and Grendel mentioned he got a winch from them and he was not happy with the result.

hey VT, what tires are you running there? i really like that tread pattern...

anyway, swyfor5, i like the style of bumper you are looking at there. I really have nothing to offer this thread except that i'd like to hear what you eventually go with...

Not to be a smart a$$ but those are Mickey Thompson Baja Claws. The tread is really cool and from what i've seen, work really well off road. Mario.

Your right, they come in two forms, radials and bias, those are the radials, the bias have tread that encroaches onto the sidewall more than the radials. Man, talk about getting off subject, bumpers to tires.

Re: 1970 K5 Bumpers/ Stock or ?

This is a KMA wincher from 1999. This bumper was the 2nd one they ever made for 67-72 Chevys. It took about 9weeks to get it. I can't complain much as it has held up to my abuse over the years. I had to modify the mount a bit, I told him to build it high and tight to the grill and he did..too tight as I would have had to cut my gril to fit the winch in there, so I moved the bumper out about 2".
Over the years I have seen KMA put out a variety of different versions so if they are still making them I'm sure you can custom order what you need or want...just may take a while to get it..
good luck
It is a pretty simple design

So have you had a chance to really abuse the D60 and 14 Bolt?

Re: 1970 K5 Bumpers/ Stock or ?

Wow, you guy's are awesome! Thank's for the pic's, and info. I think your right vt, about the stock b's being wimpy. But they look cool. As for waffeling back and forth, your right. I think I like the look of that wincher bumper on that one with the frt. fender cut away. It sets the B back a little, tucks it in some , and I don't have a problem cutting it up. I don't need the prerunner bars up top, and with the 70 grille/parking lights, I don't need the lights in the bumper. VT, no I don't weld, I wish I did. It would make things alot easier for me, but I do have a few friend's! Any body else have any info on Kennesaw mt. products?

Looks like they cut the fenders on this K5 to get the bumper to wrap around. Burts' isn't that way though...

Yep, Burt's sits higher too.

Two slightly different ways of doing the same thing.

Re: 1970 K5 Bumpers/ Stock or ?

Found some older pics:

You can see the frame mark on the inside of the mount braket. I had the bumper mounted before I bought a winch and when it came time to put a winch in I had to move the bumper out like I posted about ealier:

I simply cut off the original mount and welded on a longer pice to get the bumper to stick out a bit further..

Jtrux ~ No not really, I just went to Hollister a few weekends ago just for the day to test out my ram assist, I FINNALLY got it installed..don't hate me for not getting pics YJ already gave me a BBooooooooo for forgeting my camera AGAIN!!!!! I suck at that! Hopefully I will have more time this year to get some wheeling done and some "abuse" to the 1tons
Being locked front & rear with the hydroassit is working REAL good! I can keep my feet flat on the floor and just blub blub blub idle thru the trail

Looks good though, wouldn't be the worst thing to do to a blazer.

I agree! I like that look, and it gives you more clearance on the trail. Most original fenders are rotted away down there anyway.

That's what I was thinking, too. Don't think I need that little corner piece up there to get beat up more anyway! Cool pic's all you guy's post, I gotta get my k5 out of storage and click some. No front bumper on mine now, destroyed it a few years back . Anybody seen any other pic's of blazers with the frt. fenders cut like that for the bumper?

The front cup of our fenders is a 'must go' anyway if you plan to wheel at all, so no loss eitherway.

Re: 1970 K5 Bumpers/ Stock or ?

Right on, VT. I am leaning toward the kmt. bumper. I do have a concern that if I cut the fenders to set the bumper back a bit, will I have room for the winch in frt., and on top, without modifying my grille? Anybody got any ideas on what winch might be a good choice for this type bumper setup? Pic's, Pic's, please. Heard some bad things about kmt's service, requested some e-mail info from them, and had no response yet. It's been awhile too, not a good selling point!
