Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Pretty sure i've got a former Highlander (see SPID). Seems PO at some time coverted the interior to a Cheyenne package. I'd like to covert it back. Both the interior and the exterior trim (minus paint job). Do you all think its a good idea? Resale value is important. Do you think itd be a smart investment? Could I offset the cost by selling the console and buckets?

I cant seem to attach pics on my phone, so please see my earlier thread for pics. Sorry for the inconvenience. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...postcount=3374 http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...postcount=3374

that's a beautiful truck! i don't think you'd increase the value over that bucket setup. not enough buyers would see the value.

Resto that puppy. WOW! a 557 highlander. It would be absolutely beautiful. Ya know - I recall seeing one like this for sale a while back. Did it come with big oversize chrome wheels?? Just wondering. I cannot wait for pics. One of my favorite paint combos. it is not what is referred to as a "package truck" - but it does have the plaid trim from the factory - so you are officially in the highlander club, welcome.

It was a Factory Highlander, a Custom Deluxe trim upgrade truck. But we already covered that http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...64#post6829664 Posts 3377-3381. Short of fully correcting the truck back to its original paint (Custom Two-Tone, Med Olive/Dark Olive) and interior I don't see it being a worthwhile change. Being a built truck vs factory big block swb does not make it part of that small select group of big block swb Highlanders.

Yes they offered the plaid trim upgrade on 72 GMC trucks as well. Waiting for a SPID on the GMC davem815 posted the link to. But the interior looks pretty original including the fawn glovebox door like my GMC Highlander example has.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

There is another GMC Highlander for sale in the trucks for sale section of this site by BAD4X4

Did GMC's require Z62 Super Custom (Custom Deluxe equivalent)? I thought a saw someplace that on GMC you could get Highlander on any trim level, but I can't find anything about that now.

Every GMC pickup Highlander coded SPID I know of has been a Z62 trim level. The one Jimmy I can think of is Z84 based just like Blazers are.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

I don't have one of these trucks but enjoy reading this thread. Just curious on the GMC trucks, was the fawn painted glove box door something that was only offered with the highlander package? Were these trucks ever offered in short beds?

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

GMC, unlike Chevrolet, generally color matched the glove box door and cluster bezel to the trim color. Parchment interior GMC Z62 trucks used a neutral/fawn color for these parts in the same way they used greeen for green trim or blue for blue trim.
Curioulsy GMC continued to use the fawn accents it seems with the Highlander trim even though they changed the dash pad and steering column to black as part of the special trim combination.

Highlander trim upgrade was available on both swb and lwb 4x2 fleetside/widesides.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

I think I spotted a swb highlander in my neck of the woods a year ago. What caught my eyes were the wheel covers. I didn't know what to think until I saw them on this thread. This truck was no junker looked like the owner was real proud cause it was spotless. Oh yeah blue was the color. Think I'll try to photograph it next time.

I'm not sure if the neutral/fawn color on the bezel and glove box for a Z62 parchment GMC is the general rule. My Z62 truck with 611 custom trim with parchment has a black bezel and glove box.

Funny you should pop in! I was reviewing that very issue with Pete last night. Based on the pictures provided and GM Canada documentation, your truck was clearly a Highlander from the factory. But the appearance of the SPID suggests it was a replacement post factory. My THEORY is that the SPID was generated (possibly by the selling dealer) due to a repaint of the glove box door. A SPID blowup, to me, clearly shows fawn paint in a number of locations. I can't help but wonder if it was done at customer request. Or when you factor in the tailgate band and lack of white paint on the tailgate, possibly it was painted black as part of the facelift at some point to more harmonize the interior.

Re: Do you have a 1972 Plaid Pickup?

Wow, that is a good theory I had never even considered. This truck still continues to mystify me. I looked closer and yes it certainly looks like the fawn color in the scratches. I'm not sure however how that would have looked back in the day with the fawn against the medium blue dash. A PO likely didn't like the color combo either, so had it repainted. It looks like it was professionally painted as the outside is near perfect. I will have to do some deeper forensics with the glove box and the bezel to find out for sure. Also the instrument bezel would have to have been painted or replaced with a black bezel. Perhaps by removing it, I could see the backside and it may reveal the fawn as well. Thanks for this theory, I will certainly have a better look when I get some time.
