can't access spare tire

Someone must have solved this problem. 2006 crewcab and I can't get the spare out. owners manual says to connect extension to hoist shaft - but when I push in extention, it never makes a connection. it contacts and I see paint removed but no connection to do the lowering. anyone solve this before?

Re: can't access spare tire

Sounds like the lift/reel mechanism is broken/froze. A very common problem, especially with the factory ones that have the "safety" hook that rust and freezes the lock latch so it won't release and lower. I had to cut the end of cable to get the do-hickie that goes thru the center of the rim off.

They come off with 1 bolt, but GM does think highly of them. Last I look the cheap ones are around 150. You can sometimes find them in wrecking yard. Periodically lower and gear the cable and put penetration lube on the hook latch. Most after market replacements co not have the safety latch (I like better).

thanks for the reply. actually got it to work and it really worked well. looks like my problem was not understanding the manual. imo, the instructions could have been better.
