gloss paint vs satin: Pros and cons?

Ive been working on a 55 chevy truck for my boss for about the last year. Full frame off. Ive got the thing almost ready for paint and he decides hed rather have the truck satin rather than gloss. If I would have known this I wouldnt have spent hours and hours with a long block, but thats another rant. My concern with painting it with base/clear and flatner:s the clear is: How do you get rid of any dirt specs?Y ou cant really wetsand and buff can you? Maybe you guys can help me out by pointing out some pros and cons to painting the truck satin. Thanks, Jared

That's the same concern that I would have, and I know of no way to repair blemishes without repainting.

Right, you can't fix anything. Spend extra time masking anything you can to keep dust/trash to a minimum. I painted a CJ-7 last year with flattened clear and I was sweating bullets the whole time!! We used PPG 2021 clear and their flattener mixed 1:1 and it sprayed out great- much easier than I ever expected. It's the only job that I haven't got a run in so far! We actually had to spray it twice; the first time turned out great but the guy at Line-X got overspray on the paint so we had to sand the whole thing down and reclear it. Both times turned out great with no runs and very little trash that was barely noticeable. It's definitly the easiest stuff I've ever sprayed.

One thing that I would probably do since you are not looking for gloss, is use a very fast drying clear/hardener to help with trash. Something similar to Dupont's HC-7776S snap-dry clear.

I can say that if you think the prep work to have a nice finsih on a flat or satin paint job is needed, you are in for a shocker when you get done. Flat paint/satin will show every DA or block mark sanding mark in the pimer.

I finished with 500 paper as the final once over. 400 would have been very good but from doing several test panels the 500 had no marks. 400 was about 95% but you could see them here and there.

Yes my satin shows flaws however it is a shiny satin it’s a 1k cellulose paint made with a 4-1 mix of gloss and matte
