What usually goes wrong with the cruise control?

I'd like to fix my cruise control on my 87 2wd 700r4 truck. But I've never worked on cruise before, and I'm at a loss on where to start. Anyone know how to diagnose a dead cruise?

I replaced the blinker stalk about 10 years ago, so it's not the factory button. That's about the most help I can give on this problem. Thank you

1987 is likely Cruise III
Look in the manuals post for the Cruise III service training textbook. More will be in the service manuals.

try to check/adjust the switch on the brake pedal. that was my problem.

If it turns out that it's not cruise 3, then should I start looking for cruise 4? Or did they name it something else after that

GM used an electromotor cruise control system on the T400 trucks and the boxy late 1980's through the rounded 1990's B Body Caprice and the F body cars.
I don't believe they used that system on the RV series squarebody trucks.

Cruise III was used when they phased out the CruiseMaster transducer systems starting in 1982 or 83.

Well upon inspection...

The linkage came off. So I reconnected it to the throttle. It was just laying there. Might have a problem with the cruise if the linkage ain't hooked up. Also made sure it wouldn't come off again.

My problem is sometimes it will be something easy, but dreading having to fix a big problem, I'll put it off for 6 months. Only to find I could have fixed it in 10 minutes.

That’s what mine was also. PO must have just disconnected it, but it was there, just not hooked up.

I think they just come loose on their own. I believe this may be the second time it's happened to me. Several years ago when I was tired of working on the truck, the cruise broke along with a few other things. I used to know a good mechanic who has since retired, and he didn't charge me to fix the cruise. Just the fees for the other stuff. He probably just hooked that back up.

But I noticed it didn't have the little... retainer ring or whatever it is that keeps it attached to the throttle. So I added a stout rubber one which seems to function well. Also, the gap in the hook (on the opposite end) is very wide. It could easily slip off if the other end lets go first. I put a piece of rubber on the end of the hook, so it can't fall off again. Otherwise it may fall off the engine going down the road, and be lost.
