Stripped Head Threads

My Stainless hardware got crossways on the rear passenger side bolt hole of the intake to head bolt hole. The aluminum head was no match for the stainless bolts. I figured it was messed up and continued onwards since the rest of the intake was already bolted down.

Now if it holds, I won't worry about this unless I have an intake leak. But if I do have to pull the intake how do i fix this? Run a tap to clean out the hole and then put in a helicoil? Aluminum heads and intake (both Edelbrock).

Not much pressure in the intake so it should hold but if it doesn't you answered your question. Helicoil after tapping or you can use a slightly larger bolt after tapping.

If you find you need to do it, use plenty of lubricant and go slow using a back and forth motion and cleaning the tap every few revolutions.

Re: Stripped Head Threads

I would think you could tap it with the intake on the holes in the intake are usually larger than the bolt. Tap the hole suck out with shop vac and install bolt

Re: Stripped Head Threads

Most high end heads come out of the box with helicoil in the exhaust, rocker stud, and even some with helicoils in the intake bolt holes. Helicoil is WAY stronger than the original aluminum! I wouldn't hesitate for a second to helicoil a anything that didn't go into water,, and even a helicoil into a water jacket with a good dose of "The RightStuff" on the threads as it went together (and allowed to cure before use).
