Windshield Sealant

I have been searching and cannot find what brand or type of sealant to use to run a 6" bead each direction from the upper corner of my windshield seal.

I have a leak that trickles down the side of the windshield to the hole at the bottom on the dash and fills my glove box with water... My seal is pretty new and very pliable.

Small Sample:

  • Windshield sealant would suck because its made to be permanent.
  • RTV everyone says will rot the metal.
  • Seam sealer?

Can someone define what sealant to use instead of the vague stuff I am seeing?

Also, do you seal the outside of the seal to the body or peel back the seal and apply under the seal where the body and seal meet at the pinch?

Re: Windshield Sealant

Look at the 2nd post on this thread:

http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/sh...hp?tid/316693/

I have some of that sealer that I bought in 1982 that I just used on my truck for a small leak like yours. It will not harden and work great.

Re: Windshield Sealant

You should use a butyl rubber sealant. It stays flexible and doesn't cure like a urethane sealant. Whatever you do, DO NOT use silicone. It will eventually leak and nothing likes to stick to old silicone.

Great answers! Thank you!

Do you seal the outside of the seal to the body or peel back the seal and apply under the seal where the body and seal meet at the pinch?

Re: Windshield Sealant

You will need to peel it back and get as deep in there as you can. If you get the CR Lawrence applicator, run tape just under the edge of the gasket so you minimize the risk of scratching the paint.

And I just realized what you meant. Yes peel it back on the outside, and the inside. Use mineral spirits to clean up any excess.

Re: Windshield Sealant

I ended up getting this from Permatex. Lets see how it handles the rain the next couple of days.

Re: Windshield Sealant

I hope it works for you. In my experience (I owned an auto glass shop for many years) silicone is not going to permanently seal a leak, no matter what Permatex says.

Re: Windshield Sealant

I just went to a local auto glass shop and purchased a tube from them. I figured that if they were using it, it had to be good!

Re: Windshield Sealant

Mine would leak a little every time I washed it I would see some water drops inside on the floor mat. I thought the same thing that the winshield seal was leaking, but it ended up being the seam sealer on the driprail was cracked and letting water inside the cab.

Re: Windshield Sealant

This is what will rust out inside the cab by the visors. The seam sealer gets hard with old age and cracks then let's water in and under it , then the water can get in between the 2 different panels coming inside
