Re: slammed 57

Finally found a good hood , so after I got it on, here is the issue I had and after talking with other forum members heres what i came up to fix it, so I will share in case any others run into this situation thanks to mp&C ,big glass and others for I used a combination of everyones ideas

after putting it on the truck I noticed the outer round edge meets the cowl on the cab would not match up. after talkng with other we all agreed that the hood brace/hood settled int the middle... you can see here

heres what i fabricated to help me reshape the hood brace a bit. it bolts to where the factory hinge would be

after ,I placed a floor jack with a piece of 2x4 to prevent metal to metal contact and marring the hood brace , starting in the center and every 6" or so move out towards the passenger side . return to the center and then move out
toward the driver side

I measured before and after to prevent of over stretching and it also prevents of taking the hood on and of several times down to maybe 2-3 times. For my application it needed to be moved up about a 1/4" or so. at the ends where the hood ends meet the fenders , you can put them outwards by hand to match the cab cowl gaps

and the end result

Wow great work. I'm putting this in my build book just in case.
What's the plan for stopping this from happening over time?

Re: slammed 57

not sure what caused it.... so it would be hard to figure out how to keep it from happening again.. not really sure.... the hood was in perfect shape... do dings or dents

Re: slammed 57

working on the hood gaps

as you can see the aftermarket front fenders gaps are not even close to the originals... even though the originals are not the greatest either....so lets see what we can do bout getting them up to todays standards

about 1/2" gap here

and here you can see how they raise more than they should

and now the gap is where it should be. as you can see I split the fender , pushed the gap where they should be, I also had to split the side flange where the hood sits down in the fender to bring down the hieght... finish tacking it up, a bit more grinding down the welds , some hammer and dolly... and one less thing to cross off the to do list

Re: slammed 57

clever fix on the hood being out of shape!

I love reverse tilt hoods too, I had one once. many people dont know how much work it is to get it to drop in front of the grille like yours does, but I do! great job!

Slammed,
I have been following your build. You do awesome fabrication work and the truck is looking good. I am working on a 56 and have a few questions. That size wheels and tires are you running. What the the ground clearance at the lower lip of the front fender behind the tire. I am at about 4" and wondering if that is going to be too low for a truck without airbags.

thanks so much for the kind words, Iam rite at 3 1/2" at ride height . 4" should be good for I had my last 57 chevy truck with a static drop like yours right around 4" ( maybe a tad bit lower) and never had a problem. you just have to be on the watch for extra large speed bumps or steep entrances goin into a gas station or something like that. the issues i did have was trying to get it up on a single car trailer( have to have a lower than normal trailer or extra long ramps) or when needed to get a jack to lift it so i can work on it... i would have to get a 2 small blocks of a 2x4 to drive the front wheels on to get a jack up underneath. heres a pic of my last truck , the drive way dips a little where the front wheels are at ,so it may seem a little lower than what the truck was

Trucks doing good, engine is great, just little things -changed out alternator already, got the heating problem that wasnt really a problem fixed, have some other gauge issues, fixed the fuel tank sender, cant get the electric speedo to work with my TH400, so still messing with it. but the truck RIPS!!! really fun.

The body work may not get done for another year or so, so Im just gonna play.
