Any idea what gears I might have?
I just bought a '69 Chevy c/10 Custom long bed. No idea what engine or manual trans it. While I did try to locate the axle id number on the passenger front portion of the axle tube, I found nothing. I wire brushed it to death and looked at the front, top and rear of the tube with a powerful flashlight.
It is a 5 lug with 12 bolts holding the pan on and while I would drop the cover and count how many times the pinion gear rotated in relation to the ring gear, I would rather not do this where it is located. The fill plug is located on the driver's side front and the only number, beside the casting date is a large GM54 on the driver's side housing. The suspension is a coil spring/trailing arm set up. The info inside the glove box tells me nothing either. The driveshaft is very skinny, looks like a toothpick. Anyone got a ballpark idea of what gears I may have? Thanks for any help. |

Re: Any idea what gears I might have?
Probably best to pull the cover and count teeth (ie, 41 teeth on the ring gear and 10 teeth on the pinion = 4.10:1) when it's convenient.
At this point you never know what's inside there even after looking at the external markings and stampings. K

Re: Any idea what gears I might have?
Pull the cover. You don't even need to count teeth - the ring gear will have two numbers stamped into it. Divide the larger number by the smaller number and you have your ratio.
And Keith is right; after this many years you don't know what's been put inside that housing.

Re: Any idea what gears I might have?
Since it's a 69 AND has had the brakes converted to 5 lug, no telling what the gears are. IF, the pickup has had disc brake upgrade, it is likely that many other modifications have been made to it. A gear change might not surprise me at all.
Pull the cover and count teeth, only way for sure.......... |

Re: Any idea what gears I might have?
If you just bought the truck would you not want to change the fluids in the truck. So simply take the cover off the differential , drain the gear oil and while you have the cover off look on the ring gear which most likely you would find the numbers to show the ratio. 3.08 are common
