Re: Garden tractors?
I had been running an Ariens since '88, but even though it still runs and works, I decided to treat myself to a new mower this past summer. Bought a 42" Cub Cadet. Love it! The biggest difference is the Arien's seat was un-sprung and if I hit a couple of places in my yard square enough my whole back complained. The Cub has a sprung seat and is much more comfortable to ride around on.....has cup holders too for...um...beverages.
The only down side to the Cub so far is the engine isn't so loud, but when you engage the blades the noise level goes up quite a bit. Other than that I like it a lot.

Re: Garden tractors?
I have 4 John Deere 332s. Same as a 318, but with a liquid cooled 0.9 liter 3 cylinder diesel. Fantastic little machines.
2 get used hard(mowing thick weeds on uneven terrain), one gets used lightly(mowing a nice yard), and one is fully restored(never gets used) |

Re: Garden tractors?
I have an old John Deere rider-216 I think.Needs a new or rebuilt engine.
My favorite isn't a garden tractor ,but a commercial mower. It's a 1981 Yazoo 60' front deck mower.the original zero turn.23 hp Kohler iron "K" block. I have several other mowers I use. Just added a pull behind Simplicity tiller to my old craftsman mower for the garden. So,that makes it a garden tractor now! Mike. |

Re: Garden tractors?
I tried to jump into this hobby and found it was a bit more difficult and expensive than I realized. When growing up, my dad had a dealership that sold Jacobsen and Ariens equipment. Always had a bunch of tractors of various sizes available to play with. My grandfather had on old Simplicity and allowed me to mow his yard each week. By the time I was ready to have some fun as an adult, those things were rare or non-existent in my neck of the woods.

Re: Garden tractors?
Been into the hydraulic Case/Ingersolls - I have three of them - one 20hp and two 16 hp - all onan engines - two have power steering - one has a tiller, snow blower & blade - wish I had the bagger, it will suck up softballs ! Show some pics.
Two 3016's. One with 400 hours and power steering - one with hydriv and 950 hours. Transferring the hydriv to the power steering tractor for the wife. Attachments. Last edited by 72ironmike; 09-16-2017 at 01:08 PM. |

Re: Garden tractors?
Yes sir.
I have an 83 John Deere 318 but the (B series) Onan motor finally quit last summer (motor lasted 33 years). I'm saving cash to do the 24hp Honda engine swap. The 318 is partially restored. I also have a Category 0 John Deere 15 plow that I plan on restoring. Currently I have a Cub Cadet XT series that I purchased so we can mow the grass while the JD gets a new heart. Big difference is the John Deere is a true garden tractor, where my Club Cadet is simply a riding lawn mower. Compared to my JD at 900 pounds +/- my little 400 pound Club Cadet feels like a cheap toy, lol.

Re: Garden tractors?
I collected and used both early-60s John Deeres (110s) and Cub Cadets. Those had Kohler engines, which ran forever. I got into Economy/Power Kings as well. But now I got nuthin'. I push mow my place now and the collection took up too much room

Re: Garden tractors?
I'm into the Onan powered Case/Ingersoll tractors as well. I have an old Case 446 and a couple of Ingersoll 448's. I also have a tiller and a couple snow blowers (Case & Berco). I've been looking for a cab to put on one of them but might end up building my own.

Re: Garden tractors?
1970 Sears Custom 10XL. Dad bought it new. I restored it a few years back (except the mower deck). It's got the original 'solid state' ignition and electric start. It gets used a few times every year but my primary ride is a newer Deere.

Here's my last one. A 4020 with power steering, mulching mower deck and 1500 hours. This is already sold after I take the deck off and put it on the 3016 with power steering for the wife. 42 " tiller pic as well. Tiller, blade, snow blower and deck stay with the 3016 with power steering. |

Re: Garden tractors?
I forgot about the Wheel Horses I had, too. I just played with those, very early ones. A local John Deere dealer used to have a used lawn equipment sale every March. It was a candy store for vintage lawn tractors...for cheap! That's how I got going on the old stuff. Haven't gone for decades, don't know if they still run it. But I'm sure the age of the equipment has bumped up in years as well.

Re: Garden tractors?
I've got a 1986 214 that I restored, with a mower deck and a snowblower. It didn't come with the engine pulley for the snow blower so I've been looking for one, but they don't seem to be available.

Re: Garden tractors?
I have a Cub Cadet 149 that was built in 74 that I use around the yard and in the garden. I have a Brinly single row plow, the tiller, a couple of cultivators and a disc for it all with sleeve hitches. I am rebuilding a 1200 as I have time. Hard to find something now a days that will do what the old garden tractors could do.

Re: Garden tractors?
i dont know if this really counts as a garden tractor (though i do have 3 of those too). someone gave me this last year and it was a mess. steering broken, no seat, hydraulic lines splitting, all the electrical was chewed and burnt and a bunch of other stupid things wrong with it
it runs and drives, sent the old hydro lines out to get new ones made like a amonth ago through a friend of a friend and you know how that goes |
