Re: My 66 Service Truck Build Thread

I forgot to mention that I have a recently rebuilt sm465 from a 72 that I was planning on putting in. But I would of had to shorten the front driveline. Getting this 66 back together so I can get going on my 65 became the priority.

That is looking really good! Keep it up. It is a great truck to have for a work truck and I wish I had one like it... anyway, congrats on driving it up the road and back and thanks for sharing your milestone update with us!

I was a residential framing contractor for years and loved the service box.
I went back to school in 99 to learn AutoCad for Architectural Home Design.
Years later, I still had my 81 with the Service box and still kept much of my tools in it for easy access. I don't plan on putting any decal on the truck
I do hope to find out what original decal is under the paint and will then try to replicate it.

a 79 chevy. except the transmission is still the 66. sm420

I've held off mounting the doors until I was sure I had all the interior together.
The only thing left is installing the windshield, and then I'll mount the doors.

yOU MIGHT IN THE FUTURE THINK OF USING THE EZ Wiring kits.. not to expensive and give great results.. usually under $200.. and all new wiring.. factory colors and labled..

Re: My 66 Service Truck Build Thread

So you can in fact steal the A arms, spindles and brakes off a 73 up 3/4 ton and it will bolt up to a 66 3/4 ton?
What is the advantage of the 1 ton calipers?

Do you have any pictures of the brakes A arms and so forth so I have a visual of what I'm looking for?

Re: My 66 Service Truck Build Thread

I think I linked the 'how to' from Highlander's thread. That's where I got my info on swapping the front. You can use the information from the threads linked in the FAQ's on the 5 & 6 Lug disc swaps - it's all the same, just different lug patterns. I didn't take any pics of those features of the swap because there was already many threads with pics.

As to your question regarding the 1-ton calipers: I only used what was on the front member I found. I would assume the bigger the calipers the more the stopping power if carrying a ton of load.

Re: My 66 Service Truck Build Thread

I found the FAQ.
Sounds like the front A arms and everything attached that I should be buying for 150 in the next week is what I need.

Re: My 66 Service Truck Build Thread

Yes.
Many elect to just get the whole thing - crossmember and all. That way they can just roll theirs out, and roll the new one in.

Re: My 66 Service Truck Build Thread

Yeah, I figured the guy would want more for it if I asked for the whole cross member.
I also figured if he takes it all out and delivers it for 150 that's not a bad deal.
And I don't have to worry about the springs killing me in the junkyard.

So all I have left to do so I can pull it out of my shop/barn and pull in my 65 is:
Find nuts for front shocks - PARTIALLY DONE
Replace Water Pump.
Fix leak at radiator hose.
reinstall power steering pulley belt.
reconnect taillight wiring.
Reconnect Emergency Brake Cable. - PARTIALLY DONE
Finish welding bumper and hitch receiver.

Re: My 66 Service Truck Build Thread

Man that fresh windshield rubber looks sweet!
Glass shop up here can get the windshield for me, they just need 6 weeks warning. But, they want $85 for the gasket... I politely declined saying I will provide the rubber.... LOL

Good going man!
You start a seperate build thread for the '65 or are you just going to piggy back it into this one?

Hey Robert, who did you get your windshield rubber from? The install looks great. I don't know if I'm brave enough to tackle that job.

I got it from Dan's Classic Auto here in Portland.
Should be even closer drive for you.
Just specify you want Precision brand.
They even have a website.

I'm real happy with the way it turned out.

I will start a separate build thread for my 65.
Going a completely different direction with it.

Re: My 66 Service Truck Build Thread

Today I swapped out the dummy lite cluster for a gauge cluster I acquired awhile back.
No real reason except I have an idea for my 65 that combines warning lights with gauges, that I may or may not do in the future.

Still haven't worked out the power disc brakes.
I'm going to buy a manual master cylinder and see if I can get some solid brakes that way.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=440292

Still have a few things left to do on my punch list:
Find nuts for front shocks - PARTIALLY DONE
Replace Water Pump. - DONE
Fix leak at radiator hose. - I think it's fixed now.
Reinstall power steering pulley belt.
Reconnect taillight wiring - DONE
Reconnect Emergency Brake Cable. - PARTIALLY DONE
Finish welding bumper and hitch receiver.
