Re: ‘79 burb tailgate window switch... anybody have one?

You're referring to the switch in the tailgate? I thought mine was broken fyi. key would make the window go up but not down. Lowered the gate, sprayed every kind of electrical contact cleaner ever invented into it so it could drip back out with the switch pointed at the ground and not ruin paint. No joy. I finally ended up having to take the entire tailgate glass out for another reason, decided to take the switch out and check it. 20 seconds with a tiny bit of sandpaper on the contacts and it works again.

If you have not taken all of this apart yet, beware the coil spring "booster" that is on the back side of the glass regulator arms. It's like a frigging bear trap. I have taken apart window regulators before, just never thought about how heavy that giant rear glass is and that it might need a helper spring, and you can't see it until you have the regulator taken off. Removed the last bolt and one of the arms whipped around and damn near broke my finger.

Thank you for the info James! I’m needing the dash mounted rocker switch and the black plastic face plate that goes around it.

It looks like the switch on the left, but it is a stand alone switch on my dash.

I can find reproduction switches for a dual tank setup, but not for the tailgate window...

Re: ‘79 burb tailgate window switch... anybody have one?

Gotcha. Yeah it's starting to get to be a pain in the butt finding some of these parts now. I've been looking for tailgate glass run channels for almost 2 months now - ones that are not rusted out as bad as mine.

I know the switch you're referring to, mine has it too. It's a shame it's not the same as the power window switches. But maybe that is an option? It would not fit without making some sort of bezel.

At the risk of assuming you have not tried this yet - have you checked with a dealer? As recently as 5 years ago I could still buy new window switches for mine at the dealer. They used the exact same switch for years on other cars. My wife's mid 1990's van had the same window switch. Not sure about the tailgate window switch but it might be worth finding a competent guy behind the counter who does not act like you're not worth his time to try a cross reference.

I hadn’t thought of trying a stealer. The closest one to me is an hour away in the next town. I’ll give it a try next time I’m over there. It appears that it is unique to the ‘73-‘80 burbs as the K5’s used a horizontal oriented switch. I haven’t even been able to find a part number to cross reference it.

Thank you again for for the link! That is the horizontal version and the bezel won’t work on my dash. The plug looks the same though. I was under the impression that all square body stuff was interchangeable, but I am learning the hard way that may be so for the trucks, but definitely not so for Suburbans! I’m sure I’ll run across one in a junkyard someday or hopefully someone on the board will part one out.
