I always thought those things were cool and ahead of their time. Oooo, maybe we should have a sub forum?

Re: The '73-'78 GMC Motorhome
My grand mom had one when she lived in Key Largo FL. I always thought they were cool. She gave me a hotwheels version of it for Christmas one year and I still have it

I've always loved these. There is a guy up here selling one. (Pricey $$$) Wife says yes. Checkbook says no.

I always like those....with their 455 Toronado front wheel drivetrains, if I recall right.
The movie 'Stripes' really etched those into my mind...lol Neat units for sure. Coley

Re: The '73-'78 GMC Motorhome
If you see one in a junkyard, grab the tilt column out of it. The steering shaft is the same length as a truck column and you don’t have to collapse your intermediate shaft like you do when using a van column.

Re: The '73-'78 GMC Motorhome
I'd trade my 86,G-30 motorhome (and some cash)for one of those if I could find one in decent shape.
They are hard to come by,and when you do find one,it's pretty rough. I wish GM still made them. Mike. |

Re: The '73-'78 GMC Motorhome
Those come up for sale occasionally, I was seriously thinking about one in this area last week. However I remember those FWD TH425s were no fun to R+R. I wonder if any shops around here would even try to R+R one of those. It wouldn't be cheap probably, if my hazy memories are at all accurate. -BA

Some of them had the 403 Old engine. Have you looked at the prices? Nice ones are bringing some big bucks.

Re: The '73-'78 GMC Motorhome
I love the pic of the lime green GMC towing the Pinto.
Seriously, though, they were designed and built really well.

Re: The '73-'78 GMC Motorhome
I think that happened the last two years, 77/78. These were dropped from the line to allow GMC to focus on the medium heavies because they saw more market. RV designers were ahead of their time. Been counters and marketing team, no vision of the future. The high-end RV market has done nothing but grow since. Imagine these with Duramax power now

Re: The '73-'78 GMC Motorhome
The one with flames would be cool, without the flames. The one towing the boat, I like the mags, and ugh I hate to admit it but I like the graphics, and that they match the boat. The one in the design labs grill looks like a Pacer lol. The other two just don't work with their graphics for me. Why do all modern trailers and motor homes in this size range have those stupid graphics? ... Wait, IMO =)

I read that 8,000 of them are estimated to be still on the road.

Re: The '73-'78 GMC Motorhome
Weren't they also made by Revcon?
The rear suspension is a work of art. Finding replacement rubber springs isn't easy. When I worked at the truck shop a guy inherited one and I "was chosen" to do a carb rebuild and tune up then fix the suspension. That would be one of the many reasons I'll never own a motor home

Re: The '73-'78 GMC Motorhome
That suspension was one-off for sure. A great design, but I'm sure parts are a challenge. But with 8,000 on the road and interest increasing, I see a market for replacement parts.

Re: The '73-'78 GMC Motorhome
Is that the stock rear suspension Tim? I know what few times I drove one the thing rode great like it was on air. I had no idea it really was.
That last pic, I think I've seen something like it in a movie maybe..
