Re: BigRed 81 crewcab dually

Judging by the brake booster this was origanly a 6.2 diesel truck. I wish I could find one that clean cheap around here. Good find and good build.

Didn't know that. Thought only the diesels did. Maybe we'll get to see this at the OKC meet!

Re: BigRed 81 crewcab dually

Well you got me thinking, so I went to look at the title....which revealed this truck to actually be a 1974 GMC 3+3 dually c30. So that probably explains the brakes. And I'm sure some of you are reading this and are disappointed that someone would change a 74 round headlight front end to an 81 setup, (it can always be changed back in time) but I have to admit that its alright with me because I was born in 81 and now I have 3kids that will be riding in the back seat of a big ol' classic american pickup.

So should I leave the current brake system that uses the power steering pressure or upgrade to a later model?? I haven't even driven the truck yet, getting all the mechanicals out of the way first.

That would be cool!
But I think Michael might be too tied up to make it, eh Mr Bradbury?

If I were you I would keep the hydro-boost, they work great.

Might check the frame and make shure its not bent before you put the motor back in, just to make shure that's not the reason for the front end change.

I won't be able to make the okc city next weekend. Too many things going on right now. And the front end was changed years ago the kid I bought it from has owned it for 2yrs and drove it all the time until it dropped a valve but I will check the frame again. I know you want more pix .

Re: BigRed 81 crewcab dually

Right on!

If you do want to 2 tone it, you could always just shoot it from the body line up with black. That would be the quick and easy way, too.

Re: BigRed 81 crewcab dually

Final took possession of big red lastnight, got it out on the highway heading on the hour trip home made a stop at the gas station...but then ran out of gas becuz the gas gauge isn't working and I put gas in the drivers side tank while apparently I was running on the passenger tank. I also had to get a new battery and then the truck fired right up after a splash of gas to the holley carb.

Re: BigRed 81 crewcab dually

My trip to the DMV... Never as quick as you'd like it to be. I bought the truck in missouri so in order to get it license in kansas it has to be inspected by the state highway patrol dept. I showed up in my big old red farm truck raised the hood and waited for the inspector to look over my rig. She was probably mid 60s 5'5" long grey hair, I gave her my title and she goes up to the dash to match the VIN but mine is on the rear door panel of the crewcab. So then she notices that I only have 13 digits instead of 17. Which I guess was a red flag in here book She asks me about the truck, after some small talk she goes inside and then comes back out and says the entire front clip has been changed from gmc to chevy. I was shocked that she even noticed. But after a little more investigation the vin on the frame matches so I was clear to go...ended up getting an antique license plate cost $17yr . So now I'm on the hunt for an original 1974 kansas tag. . And who knows maybe putting an original round light front end back on someday in the future.
