Patina protection

Hello everyone. Just checking to see what anybody has done or any suggestions to preserve the patina on my truck. I use wizards detailing spray on it now and works great but I was looking for something that doesn’t wear off as fast. I don’t want a gloss look and I don’t want to clear coat it either. Thanks for any input.

Re: Patina protection

How about ..... nothing. Other than taking steps to make sure there isn’t excessive deterioration from the elements , ie: make it a Fairweather driver, stay away from mag chloride, salt, sun etc..... even a simple carport makes all the difference in the world. I’m one of those people that anything topical on the paint does nothing but create more wear and, frankly, makes good natural worn paint look really crappy........

WOW!! Where did you find that beauty? Looks like what you are doing works. I use a ton of detail spray on mine. As a matter of fact I have never washed it after I got it painted. Been five years. No ware on the paint that I can see.

Re: Patina protection

Boiled linseed oil. Hood been out in the weather since April. Our grandfathers used it to protect saws and other hand implements.

Re: Patina protection

I knew a cheap old timer who would rub used transmission fluid onto his junkers. He did it as a cheap (used trans fluid is usually free) way of making them shine but I’m sure it protected them a bit too.

Indeed this is only a fair weather driver. I don’t even drive it in the rain, unless I get caught in it. It is always parked in the garage out of the sun. Everyone asks “when are you going to restore it.” Answer is always “its already done. This was a 50 year restoration.”

Thank you! I bought this from the original owner (kind of) in Montana. He used it around his ranch.

They are Mickey Thompson. I bought them from Summit Racing. They are 10” wide by 15”.

Re: Patina protection

I say nothing... i get the same questions all the time... it's taken 51 years to look like this... Mine doesn't sit outside, and i take better care of it than it was it's first 51 years of life... all i did to mine was dawn dish soap and scotch brite to remove oxidation...

Re: Patina protection

Mop & Glo floor wax. Wipe it on with a cloth - its acrylic so it holds op pretty well and has a satin shine. When it wears off you you simply reapply.

Re: Patina protection

Paint , Paint is really good protection , and you could drive it in the rain . All these oils / floor wax ? / transmission fluid , semi gloss shiny stuff just seems to me that it will contaminate the surface and every crack and crevice. When you or the next owner decide to restore the truck years from now it will have to go all the way to bare metal .

Re: Patina protection

Agree but anybody doing a proper paint job is going to take it to metal anyway.
Those wanting to preserve a patina should either leave it completely alone or protect it. If you want to protect it then a satin clear over it is best assuming you get a good bite but that can't be assured and I've seen many instances where the clear failed and started to lift.
Something temporary like linseed oil or floor wax are better because they are temporary and require re-applying without disturbing the patina.

I agree. Paint is a great protectant. And driving it in the rain is a plus. If my truck had rot and had to replace panels and other metal components, paint would be the #1 choice. I really like this color and love the way your truck looks in that picture. IMO my truck shows it’s age and history. Kind of like your avatar! I like restored trucks and like the patina trucks too. For me, this is more practical for the things I do in my life. I use this truck for a truck, but not abuse it. I drive it to the woods to go mushroom hunting, I haul engines in the back, and I’ve been asked if I would use it to haul firewood. My answer was, if I want to, I can. I want to keep the truck alive and still use it with it still looking worn but not even close to being retired. Just like an older fellow who works in a trade like I do. He doesn’t do everything like he used to, but he knows his stuff and receives the respect he earned. Thanks for the input grumpy. I liked your response.

Re: Patina protection

I used boiled linseed oil once. About 3 days later I could not even tell I did anything beside collect a lot of dust. Maby it would be better if I could park inside. But I think the dust would still be a problem

Re: Patina protection

I have a 68 c10 with almost identical wear ...Sorry, I mean "patina"
I use a radical method to protect whats left of my paint.
I wash it with soap and water when ever it gets dirty
Then, I wax it, and take the buffer to it. 2 or 3 times a year
That's it.
Cleans up pretty good. Has a natural satin sheen when its done.

Re: Patina protection

I believe there's a number of things that will keep any nasty rust from forming, and allow it to keep looking the same. Several companies make spray waxes, or some call it "detailer" . I don't know how long it would last, wouldn't cost much to try a couple. Zep ,makes a cleaner called, Powerhouse. It cleans and may even protect for a while, great stuff!!!
