Shorten Stock Steering Column?

is it possible to shorten the stock steering column? i would like to back the steering wheel away from me a good 6 inches or so. i have a 67 chevy pickup. i took the plastic pins out of the intermediate shaft and took the two pieces apart. could i cut say 6 inches out, put back together, and put a bolt thru both to hold in place? or am i crazy?

Re: Shorten Stock Steering Column?

I shortened mine about three inches by just removing the plastic rivets and collapsing it. DON'T put a bolt in it , it was made to collapse in case of a wreck so the column hopefully wouldn't impel you. you can only shorten it so much before it hits the dash on the inside, assuming your using column shift.

Theres a thread in the faq section on how to shorten it.

Re: Shorten Stock Steering Column?

I have read that it also moves the steering wheel down lower. Anyone have experience with this issue?

I can take some better pics this weekend. This is a before and after of the column. The after is not the best angle but you can tell how close to the dash it is.

If your running a small diameter steering wheel or if your not a great BIG ugly guy like me you may be okay without lowering the seat, it was really tight for me getting in and out. I only took about two inches out of the front of the seat bracket and three out of the back.

Lowering the seat also puts your knees in more of a bind which makes the ride less comfortable, which would deffinently be a consideration at 6'6'' tall..... I'm only 6'1''

What did you end up doing to get more room? I'm 6'5" and could use the extra space as well. Thanks
