th400 bolt in to slip in

I have a th400 with a bolt in style yoke I know there is a counterbored yoke that allows the use of a slip in style but $100. A machinist friend has a lathe and a 6 pack will get it done . Does any one have the dimensions for the counterbore or how deep? some say that I still need to add a o ring to the tailshaft? any input appreciated. TY

Re: th400 bolt in to slip in

there is different shaft styles for each yoke system . the yoke also can be reworked if you have the specs .

i know a guy who has a th400 that was bolt on yoke now slip on . but the problem is he has not got the correct tail shaft in the case and it weeps oil since the correct shaft would have a grove to hold a oring to seal the slip and splines from leaking fluid past it .

if your trans has this then your prob good to go . if not then try it and see what you get .

Re: th400 bolt in to slip in

Years ago I ran a 400 with a bolt on yoke in my Malibu. Car came with a 400, so just unbolted the yoke, and slipped the original on. Now on a car this is prolly OK, since the slip doesn't slip as much like it would in a truck. Ran it like that for 60k....

Why not just use the correct driveshaft with the slip yoke in it?
