Th400 doesn’t have 3rd gear
I bought a th400 that was fully rebuilt. With shift kit and stall converter. I put it in and hooked it up. But once I try to put in D it’s like an extra Neutral. It has reverse, 1&2 just not 3rd. I checked fluid level it’s fine. The guy I bought it from went south for the winter and won’t be back until spring. I didn’t know if this could be something small I could do or not.

Make sure you have a vacuum line to the modulator. Full engine vacuum at idle.

Are you talking about when you manually put the shifter into “D” it acts like its in neutral or are you talking about when you drive the vehicle and it shifted from first to second but no second to third and it revs like being in neutral ?

any make sure you count the shifts .
th400 trans shift up real fast . mine in my k30 was in 3rd before 23 mph . i had a trans guy friend modify the governor and give me a better vac modulator and now its like stock if you baby it but if you wana take off it will hold out shifting a LOT longer . . . so much better .

I read on another forum that a guy bought a fully rebuilt th400 and the guy left and went south for the winter and the guy who bought the transmission had the governor swapped out and it worked out for him. He didnt have to wait for the dude to come back from the south to fix his transmission He said he lucked out Didnt want to wait until spring to drive his Truck.

Yes the vac is hooked up to modulater. I have a guy coming over to check it out this weekend before I go through the work to take it out
