Steel Floor in Short Step

I just looked at an ad for a 1972 Short Step Cheyenne. The truck looks original to me and the seller posted a pic of the spid. The truck has the wood box floor but the RPO Code E81 for the wood floor is not on the spid. In thinking about it I don't recall ever seeing a short step with a steel floor so my question is, was the wood box floor the only floor available in a short step. The link is for the truck in question. I wish I had the money to get this one and restore it properly.

Re: Steel Floor in Short Step

I am no authority but I have never seen a steel floor in a short step.I would be interested in finding out if they were available or not.

Yes, you are correct in your thoughts.
Wood floor was the only option for stepside beds.

Re: Steel Floor in Short Step

That's right.. No option on Stepside floors. All GM pickups had wood floors until '67 when steel floors became the standard Fleetside/Wideside floor. I built a Pro-street Stepside and used a steel Fleetside floor. Studebaker and IH put steel floors in their narrow boxes.
