dash speaker vents?

is there anybody out there that can tell me why some 69-72 blazers have the speaker in the dash pionted up through the speaker grille like a truck and some have the speaker hanging from the heater/ac control screws under the dash pointed towards the rear of the vehicle with no speaker grille in the dash? the top of dash is smooth. why? i tried to figure it being the year, gmc or chevy, or maybe even the different plants they were built in, but came up just as clueless as before.

The story I heard was that they moved the speaker below in '71 because of the water damage with the top off on the Blazers... then went back to the dash location to simplify production. Whatever the case, It seems to be a real hit and miss. I've always wondered if there was any correlation to having the speaker in the dash if it was equipped with A/C...

Both my 69 blazer and 70 jimmy are minus the speaker holes. But they both also came with the radio delete plates on them also... It is a mystery fer sure...

The A/C is an interesting thought. Mine is a 72 with A/C and the speaker is mounted below. Anyone with A/C with the speaker in the dash?

.......both my 69 and 72 are below the dash, the 72 has A/C the 69 does not. I bet GM snuck a few pickup dashes into the mix!

My 70 blazer doesn't have the truck style speaker hole. It did have a radio though, When i bought it the owner took it out to drop it in his own blazer.

No speaker grills

I have two 72 CST Blazers. The 4x4 was built at St.Louis Mo. plant, Factory AM radio no A/C and no speaker grill. The 2WD was built at Flint Mi. plant had factory AM/FM with A/C no speaker grill. I also have owned a 71 GMC Jimmy 2WD had factory AM radio A/C and no speaker grill. It was sold to a friend a couple of years ago. I would like to have that one back! I'm sure the grills were removed to prevent water damage to the speakers when the top was remove. Remember the top was an option. But I would bet if they ran out of blazer dashes on the production line you would end up with a truck dash. B.B.

Sounds like the only correlation is that nothing correlates!

In previous discussions on this, it seems like only some '72s got the "truck" dashes with the speaker holes. I think this was because they just used the parts they had on hand as they ran out the last of the production on this body style.

72 Blazer CST "Highlander" - Has air - had speaker mounted above radio, but no speaker grille. I was wondering about this. How does the speaker sound without a grille in the dash? The speaker was never connected since I've owned it.
