Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

I guess any progress is good...sandblasted and painted the dimmer switch mount and headlight buckets and cleaned up all the hardware...the headlights were mismatched and one didnt work anyway ,so I'll get a couple new ones and reassemble..

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Well after waiting and waiting on the weather to cooperate and give me some decent temps to paint ,I finally gave up...I decided to add heat to my shop....usually something we dont have to produce much of in the south is heat...but the other day I was working in the shop and it was 40deg inside...
So I bought me a modine 100k btu LP heater...this should make it tolerable...next step will be my indoors temp paint booth I've been working on...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Do you know if your shop is insulated?

I'm curious how warm/cool mine will be in winter/summer with just insulation. I know my attached garage is only insulated on the wall attached to the house and the ceiling (bonus room above) and it gets pretty cold in there.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

I have living quarters on one end of my shop..that end is house style insulation..When I built my shop I got tricked into using what was supposed to be insulation with a r13 value...I dont believe it is near what they sold me on..my shop is studded walls just like a house...the insulation used went on the outside of the studs, then the chipboard over that...that junk is only 3/8" thick with foil on outer surface...this summer I'm going back with full house style insulation

With the insulation I have it will barely stay 10-15 degrees above outside temps in winter
And extremely hot in summer
My buddies shop has full 3-1/2" insulation and its unreal at the temp difference between his and mine in summer and winter

I had the HVAC guys at work spec out what i needed based on it being house style insulation and 1750sqft with 12ft walls...they came up with 73,000-80,000btu...so I upped it to 100,000btu ...they said I should be fine even if I dont do the extra insulation...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Great info. I'm also fully insulating mine to help keep the sounds down for my neighbors too. Not just working noises, but I love music. I hope to put up some kind of surround sound system.

I just noticed the name on the heater "Hot Dawg"

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

mongo,
Good on you! I have been considering the same or something similar for my shop. First thing I want to do is complete the ceiling and add insulation up there. My neighbor did this and it was a HUGE difference.

As far as noise goes, my closest house is over 100 yards from my shop and as I told my wife, "When I listen to Thin Lizzy the neighbors do to."

Amen to listening to old rock over the sounds in the shop. Skynard, Creedence, etc.

My closest neighbor is over 300yrds away..thru the woods...but I often wonder when im working in the shop with the doors open at 1am if it bothers them...but theyve never said anything....but Ive never asked

Yeah , the full insulation will make a huge difference...but thatll have to wait for now

Shome living, that's awesome. I showed them to my wife joking around and she actually liked them. How'd your father's surgery go? I thought of the clutch and wondered about it.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Step 1 to having shop heat is completed...finally got a day off work so i built a mount for the heater and got it hung...what a job that turned Into...now to hook up electrical, gas, and exhaust...then I should have a paint friendly temperature to paint in..
Or I could just hoist the truck up in the rafters and paint it...it was 40deg at ground level,,,but I felt like 80 up on the ladder....
Still have a couple angle braces to add...but it's up there now...

About the heat in the rafters instead of ground level, I started to link Big A$$ fans, but holy crap they start at a few thousand dollars.

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

got dad back from the hospital last night..they didn't find anything wrong but he felt much better..

been awhile since ive bought black iron pipe...my goodness that stuff is priced high...left lowes with $300 less than i went in with...bought all the piping they had..
i also have 4 50' retractable hose reels ,one in each corner of the shop...they've been bolted to the wall for about 10yrs and I never did plumb them in...been dragging air hoses around the shop ever since I built it..
since I'm running black iron gas lines I figure I may as well finish the hose reels while I'm at it...and il need more piping to finish that
but ive got the gas line plumbed to the outside of the shop...have to dig a ditch to the tank next to finish the piping..

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

No truck stuff, but I managed to finish my gas line work for the new shop heater...when I set my tank yrs ago it was at the edge of the yard..since I built my pole barn my yard has moved back a bit and the tank was always in the way.....so while I had the gas off I went ahead and moved my tank behind the pole barn...now i wont have to dodge it with my C30 all the time like before..had to hurry up and get the gas back on to my itlldo for heat.. was 75deg mon, 68 Tues, and 74 today...and they giving snow on fri...just finished working 4 nights and I got to work the next 4 days...so I had to get it done..
Also got a good start on my airline project..got it about half finished...having to wait on lowes to restock the pipe rack...
Heater update...gas line done..110 power done...still have to do exhaust and run thermostat wires...then I'll have some shop heat....or blow the shop up...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

Well I'm calling the shop heat project a success ...today the outside temp is 40deg and headed to 23deg tonite...the temp inside the shop is 55deg...I waited till late afternoon to do a test run...I didnt want the sun to affect the shop temp..
So I set the t-stat on 70deg..and had to run to town..got back in a hour and half..shop temp was a nice 70deg already...when i get the real insulation job done it should be great..

Turned the heat off and checked the temp again...in 35-40 min the temp had dropped back to 62deg..which really shows the need for insulation...

Re: Columbus..the 1957 IH 4x4..

I run the heater in my shop between 62-64, I find it cycles on and off less that way and it's comfortable to work in short sleeves. Much warmer and depending upon the task I get too hot. I have a similar heater, a 125k btu natural gas unit.
