1979 chevy 350 in a 1972 , pulley issues

Hi

i have a 1972 c10, motor that was in it when i bought it was a 305, didnt run, was originally a 350/4, found a good running 350/4 out of a 1979 el camino, numbers do match up for a 79, so probably correct)# 14016379, heres the issue, most my fault, it did come complete alternator ( on passenger side), long water pump , the pulleys on the motor lined up, the 1972 original power steering did not, i tried changing crank pulleys , shimmed out crank pulley, never seemed to line up correctly, got close but not right,
so, thought id go back to square 1(only have to adjust power steering pump this way), heres where i messed up, pretty sure originally had a 3 groove on the crank but i cant find it,the water pump has a 2 groove and the outer wp groove lines up with the alternator

does anyone have a set of pulleys for a 1979 chevy 350 that i can buy or at least the numbers so i can search myself
not against going with a new set of pulleys but dont know what to look for

ill post pictures tomorrow, ran out of light

any help appreciated

Thanks

your truck originally would have had a short water pump, not long, the alternator would have been on the drivers side, above the PS pump and all would probably have lined up.

Since you have the long water pump, and alternator on the pass side, you probably need to find "long water pump" P/S brackets to be compatible. They changed to the long water pump in the square body era, 1973-on in chevy trucks, so you'd likely want to start their.

I don't know if the brackets alone will help the PS or if you might also need a different PS pump.

The power steering pump, brackets and pulley also changed in 73 and newer trucks.

If it were me I would go back to the original short water pump and accessory drives. If your truck still has the original fan shroud the long style pump will not fit it properly. Post a picture of the power steering set up that you have and see if it matches to an original 72. I'm sure somebody on the forums can post a pic of a correct original set up. If your pump and brackets are correct and original I would just post a want ad here on the forums for the correct crankshaft, water pump pulleys and the correct driver-side alternator bracket. Purchase a new short style water pump and lower hose.

Re: 1979 chevy 350 in a 1972 , pulley issues

just an update if anyone else has this problem

went a nearby junkyard today, found a square body gmc, no ac, standard transmission if it matters, bought all brackets and pulleys and junk belts(numbers still readable, lol), alternator and brackets were correct, bought extra's anyway, water pump (long pump), gmc pulley was single groove, crank pulley was double groove, installed all and alt, wp and crank line up very well, power steering bracket from gmc was off a slight bit, couple washers lined it up very well, going to need a new power steering pump, but everything did work out

have a 1979 motor, guess any 1973- maybe 85 is probably close
