Re: Low mileage 69 Camaro ready for restoration.....

Saw this on another forum this morning. Someone suggested it was an accident:

Quote:
In the video, you can see what appears to be an earthen dam with a road on top at the far end of the lake. These are pretty common in Oklahoma. (I went to high school there). If the kids were driving across the dam at night, they could have easily driven off the edge and into the water. Or, they may have been parked and having a good time, then simply drove into the water instead of back onto the road. This is easy to do, especially if the driver has a good buzz going.

It's hard to understand if you live in a developed area where there's lights everywhere. But when you're away from town in Oklahoma, everything is absolutely, positively and completely dark! Even with headlights, you can't see much.

Presumably, the same thing happened to the van they found in Florida. A lot of cloverleafs there have small, deep ponds at the center. They have a high mineral content and a dark green appearance which is almost completely opaque. You can't see anything below. That van drove off the cloverleaf and into the pond. Likely, the kids inside panicked, couldn't get out and drowned. This happens a lot when a vehicle goes into the water: especially at night when the occupants can't see anything at all.
The Camaro looks like it may have broken in half. It was under water for 43 years!

Strange how two cars that some how went in years apart came to rest next to each other. Both cars had three occupants and both Chevys.....very strange....

They were actually only a year apart, 1969 and 1970.

OK but still strange to come to rest right next to each other. But at least the loved ones will know where they are now

Re: Low mileage 69 Camaro ready for restoration.....

Underwater currents can be pretty powerful during a storm. But I'm with you, I suspect something funky. Too much of a strange coincidence, and only a year apart?

I'd be curious to know what gear the vehicles were in. Drive or in a gear may mean accidental late night or drunken driving accidents. Neutral could mean they were pushed in... They don't look like accidents to me, unless they were at very low speeds. Aside from the rust, both cars appear to be free of accident damage. Hitting water is pretty much like hitting a wall. The nose and plastic grille of the Camaro look fine. They could have went in backwards, too hard to tell, the car must have come apart when they pulled it out.

it sure looks like it just fell apart (and we think our trucks are rusty) it might be impossible to tell what gear thery're in after all these years. It just seems strange to me.

Re: Low mileage 69 Camaro ready for restoration.....

As far as accidents go, it is not unusual for multiple accidents to happen at the same place at different times. We have a local "dead mans" curve. Over the years it has taken a lot of people, not often, but the sum over 50 or 60 years is a bit scary. There could have been a bad patch in the road for a period of time that caused an issue. Our local I74 just fixed a "bump" in the road. The marked "bump" would slam me against the seatbelt stops at speed. Bump in deed! It was like that for more than a year. Lots of cars with flat tires on the side of the road just past the "bump."

As far as what gear, water should not move the transmission so a tech could figure it out. That could be a real clue. Even a slow entry into water is deadly at night. It happens at boat ramps all too often when a car just drives into a lake.

We may never know, but at least the families have some form of closure.

From listening to the tape ,,it seems real odd that the grandpa who owned the older Chevy was the only one missing at that time and no mention by the granddaughter of the other two who was in his car with the grandfather?

There was another story of a family (3 people) that was headed to the lake in the early/mid 60's and were never seen again. They may have had identical vehicles?

People were a little more helpful back then, maybe he picked up a couple of hitch hikers, and accidentally went into the lake.

I hope the news follows up on this one, very intriguing story.

Re: Low mileage 69 Camaro ready for restoration.....

I read an article this morning on the sonar equipment they were using. It said the image was clear enough of the 52 chevy they could see that the drivers door was open. So why were there bodies inside if the door was open? Already dead when it went in? We may never know

Sure, cars are found in lakes all the time. It's a good way to get rid of dead bodies. The car stays sunk and the bodies rot inside (or get eaten by the local fish). Here in desert country, you kill someone and don't want them to be found, you drop them in a mine shaft. If you're squeamish, you don't even have to kill them first. The 100 foot fall with a sudden stop at the bottom will take care of it. I hear tell. >.>

It's surprising they even pulled it up. There's entire towns under Lake Hartwell that were flooded when the man-made lake was created in the 1960's.

I finally found an article on it. No human remains found. Was buried almost to the hood in silt, so I'm sure it was expensive as crap to pull it out of the water.
