Urethane over lacquer
I'm getting ready to paint my firewall and have it all cleaned and sanded. I bought single stage urethane and was planning to spray it over the factory finish that I assume is lacquer. Will there be any problems with this? I hope to do this on the rest of the truck as well.

Re: Urethane over lacquer
"In general" you can spray nearly anything over lacquer, but you can't spray lacquer on top of anything else.
It will be ok as long as you have it clean of any oil residue and sanded adequately. The firewall/under-hood is fine, but I don't think I would do it on the outside of the body though. The lacquer could still "check" (crack) under the top coats. It would be subjected to the sun on the outer body. |

Re: Urethane over lacquer
what would I have to do to spray it on the outside? I would really like to not have to strip the paint.

Re: Urethane over lacquer
old original paint you'll be fine to spray over//firewalls make sure you've got all remnants of the grease pencil markings off the old finish

Re: Urethane over lacquer
be carefull with urethane over lacquer. I learned the hard way on my 71 vette. after 6 months the areas that still had lacquer on the body caused the paint to have tiny bubbles. to avoid this make sure to seal it with a quality epoxy primer
