Cab changed?

Truck originally from Idaho. From the pics you can see the color discrepancy. The owner's manual indicates green. Looks like a stamp in the VIN tag; was this required if the cab was changed?

Re: Cab changed?

trim tag 544 indicates red with white. Truck has been repainted. Writing on manual cover is not exactly reliable "documentation", especially considering it could have been written at any point in time. No telling what the weak stamp on the VIN tag is for. Maybe ID as part of a fleet?

Re: Cab changed?

If the cab has been changed, then you need the title that goes with the cab. The frame will most likely have a stamping # on it, but generally those are not used for titling purposes.

Re: Cab changed?

How would someone move that type of VIN plate to another cab?

Re: Cab changed?

If it were me , assuming this is a nice green body and the VIN matches the frame and 4x4 K series, I would just buy a new tag for the kick panel with the correct color code.

Re: Cab changed?

I was able to track down the original owner's son and he says the truck was always green and the cab was never replaced. The mystery continues...

Re: Cab changed?

Based on the above evidence I would attribute this to being a vehicle assembly plant error. There is probably another red/white (544) truck out there with a green (503) trim tag paint code on it. The Trim or Wheelbase could have just as well been wrong, but in this case seem to match. The tag was installed after the cab was painted and was apparently not double-checked.

Re: Cab changed?

Appears to be grey primer under top right corner of VIN tag in post 1. Chevy used red oxide and black primer if I remember correct. Can't tell if the VIN has been removed and reinstalled as some plaints used spot welds as opposed to rosette rivets.

Have you sanded down an area to metal to see what the original base color was?
