found this 72 today

I ran across this truck today. The guy is asking 2000.00 for it and says it runs good but the shifter is broken off. What do yall think and is the shifter easy to fix? Truck is really pretty rough.

Pretty clean looking 4x4 for that price. I'd be concerned about the shifter, though. How the He!! do you do that?! Hopefully no internal trans damage, but...

Price doesn't seem to far off of the mark to me. I believe that those shifter arms are fairly simple to replace. Push down on the little dome and turn counterclockwise. It should then come out.

Price doesn't sound too bad. Looks like pretty tight clearance for the front tires near the rear of the fender. I have no idea on the shifter, hopefully that piece isn't jammed in there. Wonder how it happened.

Clearance is tight on the front. Both fenders look like they have been mangled by the tires. The front bottom lip has been cut away on both sides also. Maybe that was because of rust problems.

You didn't say rough did you!?!?! That truck is purdy. Hell with the tires hittin the fenders. Let it go for now, i think it looks tuff. Well from what i can see, it has a small block and is 3/4 ton. Any more info??? Oh yeah, the shifter should come out. if not at first, you might have to use some sort of redneck inginuity.

i dont really knwo HOW it happens but i think that has happened to my 4x4 too.. the shifter on it has been broke off and another welded onto the ball that sits in the top of the tranny.. it doesnt have the down-over-down shifter of a 67-72, it has a over-down shifter like a 88-?

not sure about 2K...but then again, you don't get much 4WD, for that price.

If the engine IS sound, and everything works, w/o extensive cobbling, its maybe reasonable. The rockers are gone. Up here that means the floors are shot, too. May not be the case, in Texas, tho.

Id pull the shifter hump, and take the top of the tranny off. SHould be able to get the shifter stub out that way, and check to see if the inside of the tranny is fragged, as well...

Im not high on that rear axle, either (strong, but not too common, anymore -- read: parts availability), but then a 14 bolt FF is a pretty easy swap, IMO.

Be nice if the AC was still there...

I have the same 4-speed in mine and the same thing happened to my stick. They are sort of weak around the base after 30 years of hard shifting.

A few tips:

Pop those two spring pins out that hold the pivot ball. It makes it alot easyer.

Make sure the tranny is in neutural (use the e-brake) when you pull the old stick out.

Its a little tricky putting it in neutral with no stick. Have someone rock the truck and use a lot of pressure and a really big screwdriver

I ordered a new stick for 45 dollars from some place in Utah and had to bend it myself.

But UPS trucks have the same tranny so it shouldn't be that hard to find a replacement stick you don't have to bend. Because it was very hard to bend without tools. Good thing I eat my wheaties...Pete
