56 GMC 3-door extended cab truck - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I was at a swap meet this past weekend and saw a really great looking truck. It was a 3-door extended cab '56 GMC truck.

One of the reasons I don't own a 55-57 truck now is that I have a wife and two kids.... and can't fit them (legally) in one of these trucks.

But this one was like a crew cab with three doors.

I was wondering:

how many of these that GM made?
Were they only GMCs or did they do this with Chevys too?
Did they make these all three years? (55-57)
Is there any websites dedicated to these?
Where do I find one for a resonable price?
What did GM refer to these as? (model name?)

General Motors did not make any extended cab pickup trucks in 55, 56 or 57.
I am sure that the truck you saw, was in fact a custom built truck modified by the owner.

Well, when I said extended cab, I really meant crew-cab as this one I saw had two full doors on the passenger side like the suburbans did in the 67-72 trucks.

I didn't know they also built extended cabs like the one pictured. That's really cool as well.

My truck was custom made by me, but there was crew cab trucks made, just like the 67 GMC extended cab that I just bought that were made for the forestry and utility companies. They had a third door on the right side and had a stepside bed cut down. I have seen a few of them, there is one about 10 miles from me that I always see.

Everyone I saw was custom. I met a guy at the brothers show and shine truck show that had a nice one. He said he made his with an extra set of doors. Cut the back of the cab, then cut the extra doors in half. He had pics of the installation. It was very clean looked just like extd56 installation (by the way nice job extd56). EXtd56 did you do your truck the same way it looks like it?

I used two cabs and used a filler piece from a 58 Carryall so that the lines flowed good.The roof from the two cabs were welded together and a new piece of metal made the roof. I made pop out windows where the carryall had sliders. I also used the carryall tank on the frame and the gas door from the carryall behind the passenger door. Here is a truck built using the carryall panels too.

Most that you will see today are custom built by an individual. However, as CW stated, some trucks were manufactured by a coachworks.

Here is one such three door truck:

Here is one that showed up recently. I don't know whether this truck was built by an individual or coachworks.
