Electric garage door lock help

All of you with electric garage doors how do you guys lock them when you are away I am thinking that now that I have welders and air compressors plus a full roll-a-away and 2 trucks parked in there I should look into some security for the big door. The side door already got a deadbolt and locking handle.... Any ideas or suggestions for locking this sucka down???

Re: Electric garage door lock help

They make a kit for this, but I am not sure it's universal, it has a key,
a handle, and 2 rods, but if you forget and try to open it with remote
whammo, no way to disconnect the power unless you wire in a switch

Re: Electric garage door lock help

I was looking for info on this subject as well. We take possession of our house next Friday and I have the same concerns.

Keep us posted of any findings. Ours even have those keypads beside the doors so pretty near anyone could figure out the password and walk right in.

Re: Electric garage door lock help

I do not know if your doors are like mine but, i just place a old big screwdriver in the track by the rollers through a hole that was allready there for a reason. Thats my low tech deadbolt, but sometimes i forget to remove it.

You could go one step further and stick a padlock through the hole. That way if someone gets into the garage they have to work a little harder to get the door open to get the big stuff out. Won't stop them, but it should slow them down.

Re: Electric garage door lock help

I just unplug my openers from the outlets. No power, no open.

Good Luck!

Don't forget to padlock the bolt cutters & the acetylene torch so they can't use them to cut their way in or out.

My goal when protecting my stuff is to always secure it better than most people. 99% of the time a thief is out for a quick buck. Why would they spend 30 minutes at my house trying to steal my stuff when they could steal the neighbors stuff in 10 minutes?

Re: Electric garage door lock help

Really once they are in he shop the battle is over they have everything they need at there disposal to work there way out. The best thing to do is to get you a nice big dog to keep in the shop then keep all your junk tools in a box up front and build a wall across the back put the good box and the expensive welders and stuff back there. Keep the cheap box locked chances are the theif will see it realize its locked and just take the whole damn thing. If someone wants in bad enough they will get in. Also remember that most thiefs have been to the location they rob before, keep an eye out for "Friends of friends" and anyone who you are a little leary of.

The other option is just never leave your shop, work on your truck day and night without sleep, of course then you are going to have to take up selling drugs or something so you can make money without leaving!

Re: Electric garage door lock help

one trick is to cut down the emergency releases, so you couldnt just bust one of the little garage door windows out and somehow tug on the release cable and gain acess, id say leave 6-12 inchs of cord on it so someone can still activate it in a dire emergency

BTW, I know how to get in your garage.

Re: Electric garage door lock help

if you are going to put padlocks or some such on it, it really defeats the the whole idea of an automatic opener. If you hit the opener with it locked in such fashion it could do damage to your door. ( I did that myself one time) There is such a thing as electric solenoid type bolts that work in conjuntion with the auto opener. They pull back instantly when you hit the opener remote.
I would only do the padlock or manual bolting if I was leaving for a trip or something. I also have a sign on my door that says I have an alarm

That is the only time I use this myself. The electric solenoids sound cool. I haven't seen those.
