71-72 rear spring hangers on 69 frame

Looking for some help. I have a 69 k10 frame that I received cheap to transfer my 2wd over. Basically just pulling the body of the 2wd off and putting it on the 4wd frame. My problem is that the 69 frame had the spring hangers removed. The front spring hangers were the same as all other 67-72 trucks I believe but the issue is the rear spring hangers. In 69 the front rear spring hangers were shorter. People say just use the71-72 hangers, which is great however they're longer and I'm trying to figure out the correct way to measure and put them on. I'm trying to make sure all my measurements and angles correct the first time. Does anyone with more knowledge of this that can help?

Bolt your springs on your hangers and line up the rear most hangers with existing holes in the frame as those don't change through the years. Go ahead and bolt those in and jack up the frame until you can position the front hangers below the frame. Then lower the frame on the front hangers. That should tell you where they should be.
Here is a pic of the two front hanger styles for the rear.

Re: 71-72 rear spring hangers on 69 frame

You can't do it really wrong with the 71-72 hangers because of the brace that ties them into the bottom of the frame. You can use that as a stop when you let the weight of the frame down onto the leaves. I just had to do this method for my springs on my crew a couple of days ago. Trevor

Thanks! I'll go take a look at that. I could have swore the holes weren't lining up for me. I'll report back.

Re: 71-72 rear spring hangers on 69 frame

The first picture is of the frame showing all the holes. The second is a 71-72 spring hanger that does match up to 3 holes but I'm missing the holes in the center. The 69-70 hanger would have hit all the holes to the left. So is it safe to say bolt the mount in the 3 holes, drill out the 4th hole and bolt it and wah-lah?? Ha some of this is beginners stuff for some but I'd rather look stupid and get it right.

Re: 71-72 rear spring hangers on 69 frame

Wow sorry I got too excited and didn't read that well. I'll try to do that. The other issue has been I've rebuilt a 14 bolt rear end and the perches are being moved so I don't have a rear end to sit it down on. I seem to like to make things harder for myself.

Pat,

HA I did buddy. I was the one that asked if you have the front half of the rear spring hanger set. The ones you are selling are just the back half of the rear spring hanger set. There are four spring hangers for the rear. I have the back half, like the ones you are selling.

Re: 71-72 rear spring hangers on 69 frame

Thanks pat. I'm pretty sure these 71-72 hangers will work...just bolt the three holes that do line up and drill the final hole. Can anyone confirm that?

I am about to do the same thing, How did this work out for you? Were you able to use the front holes and drill the back?

Re: 71-72 rear spring hangers on 69 frame

Hey Paul,

Talk about an old thread and the sad thing is I haven’t got it done yet. Life came up and got in the way. I actually may get to it soon though as I’ve had money and time again to work on it. If I get it done I’ll post an update. I believe you can’t realky mess it up as the 71-72 has a bottom part that bolts to the frame, and I think there’s two holes in the frame where it needs to be. If so, I’d say bolt those two in and then bolt the others after.

No worries, I found a set and I'll be trying it next week hopefully. I post some photos and measurements for you. There is nothing out there I can find for information on this.

Re: 71-72 rear spring hangers on 69 frame

It should be 52" from center of shackle bolt to center of front spring bolt. Working from the front back it's 32.5" from center of rear cab mount to center of front spring hole. If in doubt you could put a spring in there and check wheelbase and see where that lines up.

Fantastic! Thank you for those measurements. On the 52" measurement, was that from the lower shackle bolt on the hanger mounted to frame, or the upper shackle bolt that holds the spring?

Re: 71-72 rear spring hangers on 69 frame

Wow thanks yeah if y’all get pictures that would be awesome. I’ll look into it tonight or tomorrow as well. I wish I could just bolt the springs to the 14 bolt but that’s part of my problem, the spring perches need to be moved.

Re: 71-72 rear spring hangers on 69 frame

So I used the rear holes to line up my hanger. I had to cut my parking cable bracket off and the one hole on that matched up too. It looks pretty good, and measures 30" from center of spring bolt to center of rear cab mount bolt.

The extra holes in my frame are from the previous owners attempt at putting hangers on it. He used a Ford hanger and shimmed the spring with washers. It was pretty bad.

I've concluded the cross member seems to be just a little different between the 69 and 71. I don't believe it's in the same spot either. This was noticeable when I tried to figure out where the 71 parking brake cables mount. They seem to run into the cross-member if I locate them on the 69 where they are mounted on the 71. I'm also unsure on having any predrilled holes for those. I had a hard time finding a good solid image. If you do decide to use the 71 hangers for the parking brake cable, they use different length cables as well so it will add to the cost. I'm leaning to modifying the current bracket and keeping my same cables- I'll keep you updated.

Re: 71-72 rear spring hangers on 69 frame

So from what I can put together this is the stock location of the rear spring hanger for a 69 k-10 LWB
I was hoping someone could confirm that for me.
So in my earlier post I mentioned my front hanger was 30" from cab mount, not the 32.5" as Dozerbill stated. I'm not liking the axle positioning if I move back any. I also need to consider the driveshaft length, these front hangers directly effect that. I already feel it's closer to the rear of the wheel opening than the front. It's acceptable, but not perfectly centered. Maybe it's how it's supposed to be??
So previously the way my springs were rigged in the shackle was folded almost completely forward. With the front hanger in the position shown in the photo, I'm happy with the way it's sitting.

Re: 71-72 rear spring hangers on 69 frame

Are you using lift springs? Is the center pin on the spring actually in the center? If I where in your shoes I would put the tire up in the wheel well where it looks right, make sure the axle is under the truck square and put it there.

Re: 71-72 rear spring hangers on 69 frame

Yes, 2.5" Skyjacker front and rear. The pin is perfectly in the center.

So if I put it in where it looks right I need to come about an inch forward. When I come forward I loose the 3 holes already drilled for the bracket, I lessen the 32-32.5" I want between the cab mount, and fold the shackle over forward. All bad. I am thinking the rear spring hanger mounts in a slightly different location on the 71 vs 69.

The solution is to use an axle offset block. It will allow me to move the axle either forward or backward 3/4" to 1". I a m going to wait until I get my driveshaft in to make the call on these, but I think 1" forward will center up the wheel just about perfect.

Re: 71-72 rear spring hangers on 69 frame

If you don't need or want the extra height of the block you might be able to drill a new hole in the spring perch on the axle, if you don't have to move it to far. It doesn't work on the 3/4 tons as they are cast and not solid all the way across.

Re: 71-72 rear spring hangers on 69 frame

Thanks guys! The 52" measurement from lower shack bolt to the front mount bolt was just the measurement I needed. It seemed to pull the rear rear shackle forward too much, but I believe that will change once I set the springs on the axle and bolt things in. Hopefully, I'll cut the spring perches off tonight and tack the new ones in. I'll weld those in once I figure out the pinion angles.

Thanks!
