Re: Small block starter tip of the week.....

Hey, guys. I'm in the process of swapping my starter with the O'Reilly one mentioned and noticed the broken gear in the old one. What do you think caused this? I don't want the new one to break. It's a PITA since I had to drop the header. I recently swapped the factory harness for a Painless. For a while it was fine until CLANK coming from the starter when I tried to crank it one day. Pics...

I would double check your flex plate. no gouges or anything loose. If all checks ok, make sure you have that new starter shimmed properly, shouldn't be an issue.

Hey, Barry. I was thinking of shims, but never thought of taking a closer look at the flex plate. Thanks for the tip.

Are you using the brace at the other end? The high-torque big starters are more sensitive to breaking teeth or the nose if you don't use the support brace. They are often missing.

There was no support brace and didn't know there was such a thing. Can I pick one up at any auto parts store?

*edit* I Googled it and will pick one up online somewhere to be safe. Thanks

Not sure what that X means but it could be the differance between the staggered bolt holes and the straight across bolt holes maybe. I would think they could show you though.
This is mine.

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Small block starter tip of the week.....

I just installed one from Toshiba - thanks to a tip from the folks at Gearhead Performance in Clearwater. I was prepared to purchase the Revmaster - this was less than half as much.

I've got long tube headers - got really tired having to sit for hours waiting for the heatsoak to clear. Also installed new wiring and a dedicated selinoid. Works great.

As far as the whine - at the local 711 a fellow walking by when I blipped the starter said - Damm, that sounded like a race car starter....

Re: Small block starter tip of the week.....

The fella with the broken starter teeth. I guarantee you that you need a flex plate now. You better pull the cover and rotate the flex plate 100% and inspect it at the least. Aalso check the mounting bolts/nuts for torque converter and flex to converter. Something caused this to happen. AND WHY ARE YOU FELLAS POSTING ALL THIS STUFF THAT IS NOT RELATED TO MY ORIGINAL POST ?

Re: Small block starter tip of the week.....

Im looking for a high torque starter for the 305 and wondering if these suggested units will bolt right up. I contated the ebay seller mentioned above and 305's arent showing in his application charts but thinks it will fit with no gaurantees. Hoping someone has crossed this bridge and has wise words.

Re: Small block starter tip of the week.....

This would appear to be the tip of the decade! Something I have looming in my future is a flex plate replacement, as the gear reduction starter I bought many years ago appears to only engage about 1/4 of the way, and those flex plate teeth are looking mighty worn. I believe that it is the original flex plate. Didn't make it to 1/4 Million miles; I am quite disappointed. The engine needs rebuilding or replacing; I'm hoping that the flex plate holds out until I can do the work, if my hands get well enough...and I can find a place to do it. The only thing available to me here is the street. I've done some serious work in that street- we put a rebuilt /6 in my son's Dart, and when that went TU, we swapped the entire K-member and a V-8 into it, there in the street. I've also had the engine in my '68 Skylark in and out, there in the street.

I remember that back in the '60s we could get a shop to rewind a starter so that it could crank over an engine with 13:1 compression for the race cars. I don't know how those worked hot, however. My little gear reduction starter still cranks hard (it hits, but the engine just turns over slowly) when it's hot. Even after all the extra ground wires and running the battery ground cable all the way to the starter. I don't care if my truck sounds like it's grinding MOPAR brand coffee, as long as it starts under all conditions.

Unfortunate for me, these are not available for the inline 6 with a three bolt starter.

But those have a hand crank, so life is good, right?

On a serious note, does the 6 cylinder have a hot start problem?

My crank lever is broken so I installed the "Electrisicle Startering Dohickey"!

No starting issues, just looking for modifications that will help the truck.

Do you still have the vehicle with the starter you started this thread about? How has the starter been holding up?

I have 3 of them.
2 - 454 trucks and 1 400 SbC
The 68 454 and the 73 400 both have headers. Never hot start blues. Would even spin the 400 with 36° initial timing.
